LAWN TENNIS.
AN INTERSTATE COMPETITION.
Information has been received from the
Lawn Tennis Association of Victoria relative
to the donation to the Victorian Association
of a cup bv Messrs. Buckley
{through Mr. E. F. 'Mitchell, K.C.) for
competition annually between the States
of the Commonwealth of Australia and
New Zealand. It has been proposed to
hold the first competition in Melbourne in
November nest. The rules have not yes
been approved by the Lawn Tennis Association
of Australia, but they will be considered
at its next meeting. The regulations
by which it is proposed that the competition
shall be conducted state that it
sl:all be called the "Mars-Buckley Cup competition/'
and shall be open to the States
of the Commonwealth and the colony of
New Zealand. The cup is given in perpetuity,
with a proviso that should at anytime
no contests take place for three consecutive
years it shall revert to the donors.
When gate money is taken profit is to be
divided equally between' the lawn tennis
associations of the States competing in that
year. The shares of tlje visiting teams are
to go toward defraying the travelling expenses.
A player is qualified to represent
a State who has been born in that State,
or resided there for at least one year immediately
preceding the match, and if he
is an amateur. During the time that »
player is qualifying to play for a State he
is entitled to play for the State for which
he has ia^t previously been qualified, 'lh:
captains of the^teams are to be chosen by
the respective State associations, or, in default,
by this Steams. A referee is to be
chosen by the-captains of the competing
teams. Each team is to consist of four
players chosen from not more than six
men nominated by the lawn tennis associations
of the opposing States. The singles
are to be decided on the best of three advantage
sets, and the doubles on the best
of five. The draw is to be on the BagmiH
\Vild system. Each of the players in the
team that wins the cup in any year is to
be entitled to a gold medal, to he provided
by the association that holds the cup for
the year.
A letter has been received from the secretary
of the Northern Lawn Tennis Association
by the secretary of the senior association
in Adelaide asking that a team of
10 players be sent to play members of the
Northern Association on September 3. The
match will, if it takes place, be played at
l'ort Firie on asphalt courts. It is also
stated that it is the intention of the
Northern Association to send a team to
take part in the; nest Adelaide tournament.
The Junior Lawn Tennis Association
state that it has room for two more clubs
