BEVERLEY v. YORK
WIN FOR YORK
In brilliant sunshine rfhd in the
presence of a large crowd Beverley,
who had made a sensational start the
previous week, were beaten by a
faster combination from York, at
Beverley on Sunday. Superior 111
most positions, the York team dominated
the play for the greater part of
the time, although on occasions Beverley
revealed the form which enabled
them to beat Union last week. A
feature of the game was the fact
that each team's goalsneac obtained
five goals. The teams were:—
Beverley.—Backs: G. Reynolds, R.
Ferguson (capt.), B. Edwards; halfbacks:
B. McMulJen, Grover, Hall;
centres: K. Blechynden, Broun, Paulson;
half'forwards: McManus, T.
Hall, J. McMullen; forwards: Lennard,
W. Blechynden, R. Boyle; ruck:
Mann, McLean. Rover: Cooper. 13th
man, R. Hardie.
York.— Backs: Hunt, Prunster,
Bushell; half-backs: Price, Monger,
Boyle; centres: N. Screaigh, A.
Screaigh, Robins; half-forwards: J.
Reynolds, McGlinn, Sanders; forwards:
Ashworth, A. Reynolds, Beer;
ruck: Gurney, McRae. Rover: W.
Screaigh. 19th man, D. Bryan.
Umpire: Chapman.
On the bounce York were first into
their stride and a pass from W.
Screaigh to C. Boyle was sent forward
to A. Reynolds who made no
mistake and raised both flags within
a minute of the start of play.
Beverley now retaliated and when
Cooper was freed his kick found W.
Blechynden, who equalised the score.
York came again, however, and carrying
the play into Beverley's territory
had them on the defensive until the
ball was forced through for a point.
A chain of marks from Grover to
Paulson to J. McMullen to W. Blechynden
resulted in that player again
raising both flags. Winning now
in the ruck Beverley again went forward
and W. Blechynden, receiving
from McManus, raised his own and
the team's third goal. York replied
with two singles before Beverley
again broke through their defences
for a goal by McMullen. York were
unfortunate when a shot from Mc-
Glinn hit the post, but were compensated
when, from a nice shot, W.
Screaigh raised their second goal.
Just before the bell, Reynolds Irom
a nice marjc raised both flags to give
his team a slender lead. The scores
were;— . .. 1
York: 3.7 (25 pts.)
Beverley: 4.0 (21 pts.)
On changing over the Beverley
rucK men asserted themselves and
when Lennard was freed he passed
to McManus who found W. Blenchynden.
However, Blenchynden was being
well guarded by Prunster and a
hasty snap resulted in a single. Although
Beverley maintained the pressure
the York back men stood firm
and from a shot Hall could only
raise one flag. When Reynolds was
tree he passed to Ashworth who
brought up his team's fourth goal,
and Beverley, with a series of passes
trom McManus to Cooper to Blechynden,
also scored their fourth
goal. Continuing to win in the ruck
i'ork went forward for Reynolds
again to raise both flags, but when
this player again received the ball his
kick was astiay and only a> point resulted.
Players in both teams were
both strange to the new holding-theball
rule with the result that free
kicks were plentiful. Again York
went forward to be rewarded by a
goal fjrow Ashworth. Beverley[s
ruck men now began to make their
presence felt and the team was unfortunate
when Lennard from a snap
hit the post. Marking the kick off,
Hall forwarded to Mann who raised
the sixth goal so that when the halftime
bell rang, York led by only
eight points. Tbe scores were;—
York: 6.12 (48 pts.)
Beverley: 6.4 (40 pts.)
Resuming after the interval Beverley
brought McManus into the roving
position and switched J. Mcthe
opening speech and congratulating
tbe organisers on tbe interesting
and beautiful display.
In the evening a community coo
cprc was held, the popular Bill
Talbot conducting in bia own
inimitable manner, whilst good
turi.s were provided by a visiting
ventriloquist and two comedians.
There was again a very large
gathering present and much interest
was taken in the amateur
trials in which the competitors
were Miss C, Cross and Miss Vi.

Mullen on to the back line. The
changes certainly made a difference
to Beverley's play and the team playing
with,more cohcr.-on than in th?
first half looked as though they might
surprise the visitors. However, York
were still faster to the ball and were
playing with more system. Beverley
scored first, when after a lot of
scrambling play they broke through
the York defences for Lennard to
snap a point. From the kick-off Beverley
again went forward and Hall
registered another single.' Then
York with a chain of marks from N.
Screaigh to McRae to W. Screaigh
broke through for a goal which was
was quickly followed by another by
McRae. Ferguson had now come
into the ruck from Beverley land
forwarded to Hall who was unfortunate
to only score a point. Two
more singles in quick succession
raised the hopes of the Beverley
supporters but they were dashed when
with only a few minutes of play left
for the quarter York through the
agency of Renynolds and Ashworth
added two more goals. The threequarter
scores were:—
York: 10.12 (72 pts.)
Beverley: 6.9 (45 pts.)
Within a minute of the start of
the last quarter York scored another
goal through the agency of J. Reynolds.
Ferguson in the ruck for
Beverley got the hit out and passed
to Lennard who sent the ball to the
centre half-forward position where
Hall took a nicely-judged mark. His
shot found Cooper who in turn passed
to Lennard who had no trouble to
raise the seventh goal. But York
put the issue beyond doubt with two
goals in quick succession by W.
Screaigh and A. Reynolds. Beverley
went down fighting and a nice piece
of play between Ferguson, Edwards,
Hall and Blechynden resulted in the
latter notching his sixth goal.
Through poor kicking three more
shots resulted in only three points.
The final scores were:—
York: 13.13 (91 pts.)
Beverley: 8.14 (62 pts)
