REVOLT IN REFORMATORY.
CONSIDERABLE DAMAGE DONE.
ADELAIDE. — The ringleaders in the re
cent revolt at Redruth Reformatory were
Ursula Margaret Cruse and Ethel Grace
Gregory. Both girls had been committed
to the instituioo for being uncontrollable.
They made their escape over the wall, but
were soon recaptured. On Wednesday they
appeared before Burnt police court an a
charge of having wilfully and maliciously
damaged Government- property to the ex-
lent of £10. Both pleaded guilty.
Mr. Kearney, of the Stats Children's de
portment, said the girls at the institution
destroyed practically every window in the
building, tore down ornamental and expen
sive ventilators, ripped the iron off the
roof, tore the lining, from the walls of
their cells, . and even pulled down the
masonry. The doors of ' the cells were
smashed, and the place was now in a state
of ruin.
The ' beach ordered defendants two
months' imprisonment, and asked Mr.
Kearney to intimate to the council that
it was impossible for the matron to con
trol the institution .unless she was vested
with power to administer corporal pun
ishment. The disturbance which had cost
the Government a -considerable amount of
money, would not have occurred had she
possessed such power. The matron was a
good woman, and would be just like' a
mother to the girls if they were made
amenable to a better system of discipline.
