MURRAY FLOWS OVER THE LEVEE.
RIVER NOW FALLING.
COllUAM, Tuesday.
The river "rose 4 inches through the
night, nnd overflowed the levee hank in-
several -places, .inundating hundredth of
acres of crops and grass land, and forcing
Ihe residents lo move to higher ground.
The village settlement of Koonoomoo, 2 .
miles front the river, which was built on
reclnimcil land, is .swamped through tlie
icvco giving way in places, and' great
damage ' lo properly has been caused.
The inhnbiututs . have taken refuge
in the farms on higher ground.
Some are .being accommodated at
the Yarrowcyalt school, 5 .miles away.
There is an average depth or 2 feet of
water all over the Koonoomoo settlement.
Mr: Catani, of the Public Works depart
ment, is lie.re endeavoring to protect pro
perty and relieve distress. About 30 fami
lies have been a fleeted by the flood, but as
this river is falling at Yarrawonga it is
not anticipated that any more homes will
be submerged. The school teacher til Koo
noomoo look the precaution litis morning
to close the school, and the building is
now surrounded with water. The rivef is
within 9 incites of the to|>. of the high
embanked road between Cobram and Bn-
l-oogn, and if a gap occurs in tlie roadWay
communication between the towns will he
cut off. At Cobram East the farmers
turned out en masse <lo slop the water
coming between the sand hills on Mr.
Hugh Dick's property and flooding an area
of crop land about 10 miles square. By
working all night ami erecting a big em
bankment 20 chains long, tliey. were suc
cessful in their aim. Fortunately the ex
treme end of the levee at Cobram lias
stood tlie strain, otherwise tlie Govern
ment township would ' have been inun
dated. ' '
