BALLARAT.
AIR. KIRTON OPPOSES AIR. DEAKIN.
BALLARAT, Wednesday.
After beating about thf bush for a long
while in search of a candidate to oppose
the Prime Alinister, Air. Deakin, the local
branch of the National Political League —
which is composed mainly of deserters
from the Libera! camp and rank free
traders — has at ' last resolved to nominate
Air. J. W. Kirton, chairman of the Balln
rat Water Commission, to contest the elec
tion. Air. Kirton, who represented Bal-
larat West in the Legislative Assembly for
many years, was to-day interviewed
by a deputation from the league. It was
pointed out, however, that the executive
had no power to make the selection, but
that, if Air. lvirton would accede to its
wishes and would address a meeting of
members, there would be no doubt as to
the outcome.
Air. Kirton, in replying to the over
tures of the deputation, said that, after
the prominent part Air. Deakin had played
in the formation of the National League", it
was' only right that his subsequent conduct

in the interest of anti-Socialism he would
be pleased to be tlieir standard bSarer and
would do his best to win the seat.
It was decided to call a meeting of
league, members at the Mining Exchange
on Friday evening next, and also to ask
the Australian Women's National League
to attend and endorse Air. Kirton's candi
dature.
