RUSSIAN REPRESSION.
' DUMA'S POOR PROSPECTS.
LONDON, 10th October.
The severely repressive policy which con
tinues to bo pursued in Russia, is indicated
by the statement that during, the past six
days there have been over 100 executions,
tlic majority taking place in 1'olnnd.
The Jewish citizens of Odessa became
panic stricken owing to.M. Dubrovin, thq
president of the. Union of the Russian
I'eoplc, inciting 300) of his followers to ex
terminate nil rebels and Jews, since tlie
Russians, lie declared, wanted neither con
stitutions. nor parliaments, but only ortho
doxy and autocracy. Tlie prefect of Odessa,
however, took measures which prevented
the threatened disturbance.
NEW DUMA MENACED.
.. A further statement concerning tlie new
Duma, which will meet oil 20lli February
next, lias been made to a press interviewer
by the Russian Frothier.'
M. Slolypin stated that even if a Duma
hostile to the Government were returned
its members would be permitted to as
semble, but if itH altitude were similar' to
that of lhe first Duma it would be dis
solved. The prerogatives of the crown and
the fundamental laws of the empire, be
said, ought to be respected.
M. Stolypin' added That the zemstvos,
Which had recently ' been the strongholds
of the opposition to the Government, were
beginning toi approve of the policy of the
latter.
THE BRITISH DEPUTATION.
THREATENING LETTERS."

be increasing. British residents in St.
Petersburg urid the British Embassy have
received threatening letters from anony
mous writers declaring, in connection with'
the proposed presentation of tlic memorial
to the Duma, that "British interference"
will not be tolerated.
The Prefect of Moscow has refused to
permit a public reception to be tendered to
the members of the British deputation.
RELIGIOUS FREEDOM.
The Russian Premier proposes to grant a
highly important reform in connection with
the State supervision of the churches. He
has prepared a in iv conferring unrestricted
freedom oil all dissenting churches, and
also the right of registering marriages,
births und deaths.
BOMB THROWERS FORCED TO
FIGHT.
General Dumbadse, the commander of tlie
troops at Scbaatopol, was wounded by the
explosion of a bomb thrown at him in the
street. The 'perpetrators of tlie outrage
were pursued, .but they fought their way
through a posse of police and made their
escape. . ,
"ROBIN HOOD" GANGS..
Lawlessness continues to reign through
out tbe Baltic provinces, where Robin Hood'
gangs, who -'call themselves "Brethren of
the Forest,"' are over-running the country,
and confiscating movable property of oil'
kinds. A remarkable feature of the ban
dits' operations is the fact that tlicy give
the .owners formal, receipts for everything
they, seize and remove.
