. Ihc local wheat exports for this season
total 749,225 bags, and while the wharves

An attempt was made on Monday to
tow the barque Kylemore from Melbourne
to Geelong. where she is to load wheat on
behalf of Messrs. John Darling and Son;
hut t.here was such a strong wind blowing
across the Hopetoun Channel that the pilot
refused to take the barque through. The
Kvlemorc therefore anchored outside
Point Henry, and she is expected to enter
Corio Bay early on Tuesday morning.
The steamer Lady Mildred, which arrived
in this port on Monday afternoon from
Newcastle with 3500 tons of coal, had rather
a rough trip round. She left Newcastle at
midnight on Thursday, and until Gabo was
reached at 3,30 on Saturday a after
noon south nnd south-west gales, with high
head seas, were experienced. At- Gabo the
steamer Heathcraig was anchored, having
run in for shelter. The remaindec of the
Lady Mildred's voyage was accompanied by
north-westerly gales, which continually
flooded the flecks, and caused the after
part of the steamer to be immersed for
long intervals. No damage was, however,
done to the steamer. Only 950 tons of her
cargo are to be discharged here, the balance
being for Melbourne.
Tlic annual Geelong musical and elocu
tionary competitions were commenced on
Monday evening at the mechanics' ball. Mr.
E. Wilcox, who presided, said the committee
was starting with a liability of £700,
which it hoped to wipe nut. The contralto
solo prize was won 'by Pearl Green (Rich
mond!, with Florence Newell (Melbourne)
second, and Jessie Le Pine (Richmond)
third. First and second . humorous recita
tion for gentlemen, an open scene by the
Chiswicks and other items also were got
through.
The Geelong Poultry and Kennel Club
lield a creditable exhibition on Monday
evening. The principal prize takers were: —
M'Rorie and Mayne. for Indian game
fowls: Chas. Diekins, for British game; W.
Mansfield, for Minorcas; Chas. Diekins nnd
Shepherd, for Leghorns; R. Hodges nnd
F. Mathews, for Bantams; C. Diekins and
