ASSOCIATION, MATCHES.
RICHMOND (8.12) BEAT NORTH MELBOURNE
(6.9).
in tho presence of an immeuse crowd at Rich
mond the Association premiers and runners-iip of
last year met for the first time this season, in
which neither had been previously beaten, and a
bard and sternly fought battle resulted in Rich
mond's victory by 15 points. The plav wos of n
character described by partisans as "eaVnest " and
(hnffw ?v IbVL Richmond claim
their weight "told," and North Melbourne
complain that it was used with unnecessary force,
especially in the case of their brilliant wing man,
was so persistently "attended to"
?. ,»i seriously handicapped. For a rough, hard
f' J, , Nva9 a t?rcat contest up to half time,
when Richmond were exactly one goal ahead; but
all through the third quarter North Melbourne
showed to advantage, und to a greater extent than
the scores indicate. During that period, however,
Richmond were spelling Brennan nnd Johnstone
irom the nick, and when they wore replaced in
tho last quarter the play wns again even. Rich
mond played eleven men who wore not in Inst
year s team, and have three nickmen— Johnstone,
Lrennan and i\ Williams— all over G feet hHi and
over i;t st. in weight— a pretty solid trio! These
three ,were of great use on Saturday. Johnstone
adding the advantage ot skill and cleverness to
his weight Ruddock, from Droninna, again showed
that in him Richmond has secured a very fine
footballer, and the winning side was also well
served by Richardson,- Edmonds, Rickctta, Has-
sett, Rudd and Evans, who had to plav back
after wrenching his ankle, P. Noonan, roving,
played a great game for North Melbourne, as did
Considinc, Morriso.n and D. Noonan, and others
who. played well were Kennedy, Dalton, Brother-
ton, Kenny, Jamicson (until he hurt his shoulder),
Stewart, M'Cann and Groves. North missed Barnes,
who was absent, and M'Dermott, injuring his
a , ler to he carried off the ground. Bain,
who had no light task, umpired well. The result
has roused great enthusiasm amongst Richmond's
supporters, who arc very confident of repeating the
success of 1002, in which year Richmond won tho
Association premiership. They certainly have a
very powerful team, but it may perhaps be as
well to caution some of the heavy men as to how
they use their weight. Of course at football all
men ot all sizes must expect to meet with and
accept a fair share ,of "bumps," hut the North
Melbourne players and supporters complained bit-
tcrly on Saturday night of the alleged knocking
about that Stc-wart had been subjected to.
