THE MANGHURIAN CAMPAIGN.
M0TIEN-LING BATTLE.
- JAPANESE GALLANTRY.
HEROIC STAND OF INFANTRY.
RUSSIAN CASUALTIES 2000.
LONDON, 29th July.
Further details of the severe battle east
of Liao-yang, among tlie Motien passes, in
which tlie Russians admit a decided re
pulse, with casualties exceeding 1000, show
that tlie Japanese infantry specially dis
tinguished itself. General Kuroki's foot
men snowed remarkable elhciency, initia
tive in action and marksmanship. The Rus
sians were out-genorallcd and out-fought on
all points. Though tlie Japanese outposts,
upon which the Russians fell in the fog of
early dawn, were greatly outnumbered,
they fought most stubbornly, keeping the
ground until reinforced.
One company of Japanese infantry re
sisted tlie attack of three Russian bat
talions. Another company fought doggedly
against a whole regiment, holding the posi
tion even after ull its officers were killed
or wounded , and finally, when reinforced,
it compelled the attacking regiment to re
tire.
JAPANESE CASUALTIES.
The Japanese casualties are reported to
be 4 officers and 39 men killed, 15 officers
and 241 men wounded — total killed 43,
wounded 250. The whole of tlie casualties
were sustained by the second division of
General Kuroki's army.
THE RUSSIAN LOSSES.
Neuter's special correspondent with Gene
ral Kuroki's army contradicts General
Kuropatkin's assertion that the Russian
troops were obliged to retire because they
were ovcrpoweringly outnumbered. Tlie
correspondent states that there were as
.many Russian soldiers fighting in tlie Mo-
tien-ling battle as were engaged in the first
general engagement of the war on tlie Ynlu
River, while tlie Japanese engaged at Mo-
tien-ling comprised only one brigade and
one battalion. Router's correspondent esti
mates tlie Russian losses at 2009— double
General Kuropatkin's statement.
GRAND DUKE BORIS IN THE FIELD.
The Grand Duke Boris, cousin of the
Czar, who was recently reported to have
been recalled from tlie front and ordered
to Archangel on the White Sea as a
punishment for insubordinate escnpades,
tool: part in the Motien battle. He was
serving witli tho Ikha-wan reserves, which
General Keller was obliged to order up to
reinforce his attacking battalions.
JAPAN'S ADVANCE.
General Kuroki's scouts have, since tho
battle, pushed further westward, and are
now patrolling within IS versts (about ten
miles) of Liao-yang.
