LONDON, 22nd May
The Australian cricketers commenced a
match against Oxford University at the
picturesque Christchurcli ground to-day.
The weather was cloudy and warm, a
heavy thunder storm on the preceding
day making the wicket very soft. Com
mencement of play was delayed until
12.20 p.m. Oxford won the toss and bat-
ted first. Tliey scored 131, Richardson
securing six wickets for 28 runs. Austra
lia compiled 06 for three wickets. There
wus an attendance of about 5000. Col
lins, Macartney, Oldfield, Everett and
Hendry stood out from the Australian
side. The teams were as follow: —

Serrurier. who is an ex-South African
player, and Stewart-Brown opened tho
batting, Gregory and Ryder being the
first bowlers. Tlie batting was slow at the
start, only 5 runs being scored in six overs.
Serrurier played a ball from Ryder ou to
Ills wicket when tlie toia'I was only 2.
Holmes, a Surrey cricketer, was stylish
and confident, Witli the total at 17 Grim-
mett relieved Bytler, who went on at the
other end instead of Gregory. Holmes,
opening out, made an excellent off drive
to the boundary at the expense of Bydor.
Off Ryder's next ball, Holmes, who had
scored 11, was. missed by Ellis. Richard
son relieved Ryder when 27 runs had been
scored- in 55 minutes. The hall came
slowly off the pitch, but the batsmen
rarely got the ball past the fieldsmen.
Gregory for several overs maintained his
usual pace. Ho created a slight diversion
by dropping the hall once as he was
about to deliver it. Holmes, who scored
20, _ was caught at long on by Taylor off
Grimmett. He played patiently, and hit
two 4's.
The game, which before lunch showed
signs of life, relapsed after Holmes's de
parture. Taylor was getting Cli'innuott
awav to leg. The half century was
reached after 105 minutes' play. Taylor
was the only one to do anything with tho
bowling. Playing forward to Grimmett,
he d e powerfully. Stephenson made a
couple of excellent boundary . hits off
Richardson, one being a square hit and
the other a straight drive. Grimuiett
-ielded a dozen singles, but kept the hats-
men playing him. At 7S there was a
double change, llyder and jMailey reliev
ing Richardson and Grimmett.
A "RUN-OUT" INCIDENT.
Shcphcnson, when IS, in attempting a
short run, was run out, Ponsford at
mid-on throwing down tho wicket.
Rvdcr, however, had obstructed Stephen
son, who was-allowed to continue in re
sponse to the Australians' appeal, and
notwithstanding that lie had been given
out by tlie umpire. The crowd applauded
the Australians for their good sportsman
ship. Stephenson opening out, hit Maiioy
f"r 10 in one over, utilising his fine
physique to advantage. Taylor, on scor
ing a couple in tho slips off Mailey,
brought up the 100 when the innings had
lasted 155 minutes. Stephenson proceeded
to hit merrily, and Taylor scored 11 off
ono over from Mailey. Stephenson then
drove Richardson straight for 0, the ball
hitting the sight board. In the same over
Taylor was dismissed lbw, howled Rich
ardson. He had displayed splendid de
fence and confidence. He batted for 100
minutes and scored 34, the partnership,
which yielded 01 runs, being of 50 minutes'
duration.
In Richardson's next over Stephenson
was magnificently caught in the long field
by Ponsford, who after running for 20
yards took tlie ball side on. Stephenson's
45 included one 6 and four 4's. He drove
forcefully. Richardson dismissed his name
sake aud Grcenstock with consecutive
balls. The last five wickets added only
11 runs, the total of 131 being scored in
100 minutes. Richardson, who maintained
a splendid length and had some turn on
the ball, captured six wickets for 28
runs.
Australians at the Wickets.
Bardsley, who led tho team in the
absence or Collins, took "Woodfull in with
him to open the innings. Butterworth
and MeCaulis, the opening howlers, were
both fast, and kept a good length. The
batsmen each rrmde a straight drive to
the boundary off Butterworth. Grcen
stock, a medium-pace left-hander, relieved
Butterworth at 22, of which 7 had been
entered up to "byes."
At 30 Serrurier relieved MeCaulis. Tlie
batsmen scored mainly off Grcenstock,
runs coming on an average of 1 a minute.
Woodfull, after scoring 21, was smartly
snapped up at the wicket by Abcll. Taylor
was tlie next' batsman. Richardson re
lieved Greenstock at 50. Taylor quickly
got to work, and was applauded for a
beautiful carpet drive to the boundary.
He drove crisply, and gave one of tlie
best displays of the tour. MeCaulis re
lieved Richardson at 71. He beat Bardsley
in his second over. Bardsley compiled 30
in 80 minutes. Holmes, who bowls fast
right-hand, displaced Serrurier at 80. Tay-
lor on-driving hie first ball to the boun
dary. Ponsford, after scoring 4, was
bowled by Holmes's fifth ball. When
stamps were drawn the total was 06 for
three wickets, Taylor being 30 and
