COMMERCIAL.
Tue Age Oftice, Friday Evening,
A raoderato amount of burincss has been
transacted in tbe import markets, without, how
ever, leading to any improvement in the aspect
of trade generally. Urcadstnfls are quiet but
(irni ; the demand continues light. Wheat is
worth !>s. Hd. for good northern. Parcels of
country Hour are quoted at £3 - 30s,, hut no large
sales are reported nt the price. Feeding grains
were not extensively dealt in. A small lot of
maize was sold hy auction at fis, aud in the
absence of transactions privately there is no
other quotation to give in the present unsettled
state of the market. Ordinary feeding onts were
sold under the hammer at 5s. 5d. By the Cali
fornia!! mail we have received San Francisco cir
culars to 8th October. Tbe Italy bad sailed, 22nd
September, with 7049 centals oats for Melbourne,
nnd the Arestos was loading 12,000 centals oats
for tbe same destination. Wheat was selling at
1,374 to LG0 fr ordinary to choice. The
Liverpool telegram of 7th Octoberquoted 10s. to
10s. 3d. for avorage, nndlO.®. 4d.tol0?.9d. forelub.
Barley was largely quitted nt 1.05 to 1.10 for
bright feeding; 10,000 centals prime chevalier
had been sold at 1.02 J -to 1.G5. Oats were
quoted at an average of 1.45. Freight to Mel
bourne, 40.®,; to Cork, £3 2s. Gd, to £3 6s. New
York advices reach to the 2nd October, and the
following clearances of vessels with kerosene
were reported forthecolonies — Nomad, 29th »Sep-
tember, for Melbourne, 6000 casks; Osseo,29tb
September, for Dunedin and Wellington, 4350
casks ; Rapido, 20tli September, for Auckland
and Adelaide, 5000 cases : 35dith Ross, 21st Sep

malt, and several sales of fair sized parcels have
been effected for trade purposes at lis. 3d. to
lis. 4?,d. In tobacco, wo learn of the quittance
of 300 three-quarter boxes medium tens, on
private terms. Under the hammer, 58 packages
twist realised, with all faults, Is. 3d, to Is. 3|d.,
not- cash. A private telegram from Calcutta
advises a rise in cornsacks of 2 rupees per hun
dred, in consequence of an advance in jute. A
shipment of Aitken's bottled ale was placed at a
price not disclosed. Brandy shows no improve
ment : a line of 150 quaiier-cosks Heuuessy's
was cleared out on private terms. At the timber
