THE PASTORALISTS' UNION.
OFFER OF SHEARERS FROM NEW
ZEALAND.
A meeting of tho council of the Pastoralists'
Union was held yesterday, at the offioes,
Bonrko-strcet.
A telegram was received from Brisbane as
follows : —
Carriers' Union hold a ' meeting at Aiigatbslln
yesterday, at which it was decided not to strike.
Thoy will carry Oakwood wool.
This message was accepted with expressions
of satisfaction.
A letter was received from Dnnedin, New
Zenland, of. which the following excerpt was
ordered to bo handed to tho press for publica
tion : —
I have to-day wired you, tlirongh my Mclboarno
nnn.that, I um advised that competent shearers, up
to 300, can be obtained bore on short notice. Mr.
J. R. Scott, with whom I have had several inter
views, assures me that ho will have no diffi
culty in obtaining that number of good
men, or even more. They would bo mostly
the sons of farmers whose harvesting operations are
over, or in their slack season. They would be Tery
clad of the opportunity to work in Australia. I
havo personally seen several shoarers Who havo
worked for my firm well, and thoy have all expressed
their readiness to go, provided thoy are guaranteed
work and protection, both of which, as well as their
passages ovor, I have tolil them would bo assured.
The council decided to issue an amended defi
nition of what they call " freedom ot oontraot,"
viz.: —
The right of nny man to give or accept employ
ment without intorforcnco or molestation.
The oouncil desiro it to be understood that by
this definition they contend for no special rela
tions between employers nnd employed, but
simply for the observance of law.
