To the Editor of Bell's Life in Victoria.
Dbak Ui'.u,— In your last number I find you have
given it an your opinion that a fllly is a marc, or that it
can bo said' u inaru won tho Derby. Now, in racing
phraseology, I maintain it is not so, as thev aro colts or
fillies until* they aro five years old, and I am borne out
in this bv all fportlug works I know. ' Ruli,'you
will find, pins them as b f, b c, until five, and then it is
b mare or b h ; und although a filly i-i the female, and
consequents, I suppose, a mare, yet I derm it much
the sumoascalling a girl a woman. Of courso this is
only my opinion, and I would not wish to givo it as
vofth moro than yours; but as you aro looked upon as
an authority in thi'.'o matters, I think you will ceo that
this is a matter of some importance. I also sec in your
list of stallions imported here, which is taken from till)
ninth volumuoftho-'Stud Book'— is this' IvnglishStud
Book?'— [Ye.'.— Ki-.l — two, if no more, mistakes Hes
borouKh wua imported (turn England to Tasmania by
Mr. Cliitty nbuiit 1811, I think, and after to Victoria.
Kelpie is by Weutherbit, and not by Cossack ; and there
wcro several horses and marcs imported of which no
mention is inadi) at all. I supposo this must bo
from tho ' Kngllsh Stud Hook,' as I havo as
yet onlv sein ono volume of tho Victorian;
and I ani at a ,'dss to know how entries ore to bo re
ceived, whether during foaling time or at any timo
during the year; and why mares that aro by thoroughbred
horses and the ir dams by thoroughbred hnrses should not
have a place? I think I was about the first of your
correspondents who urged upon your notico tho want of
tho ' Stud Hook,' and I would beg to call your attou
tion, and that of many besides, to the fact that
many of the sires of tho country aro not in it, aud thcro
are many, I think, vcrv doubtful pedigrees; in fact, it is
no proof of a hursu's breeding that he is in your 'Stud
Hook.' Let it be understood that a certain remove
from cross-breeding is to qualify, but I submit that
racing has nothing to do with it, unless as far as fancy
goes, us wo all know many horsc3 without an immediate
good breeding Imvu raced well, but tholr stock am often
worthless. In fact, it is tho great question of breeding or no
breeding, and if theso racing celebritios fmd a placo
in the ' It acini? Calendar' or ' Huff's Guide,' it is all
thev can at piro lo. Trusting you may not deem my re
marks impertinent, I urn yours, faithfully, DItEiiDER.
