NATIVE PLANTS.
The passing of the Wild Flowers
and Native Plants Act last session has
already had good effect. This Easter
it was noted that there was much less
of that deplorable havoc wrought
among ferns and plants in public
reserves than has been the case in
years gone by. Usually at holiday
times hundreds of motorists coming
in from country runs have brought
with them not only fern branches,
but roots and stems for planting in
their home gardens. This year very
few took the risk of breaking the law
which now makes it an offence for
any person to take wild flowers or
even gum tips from any public high
way or private land without permis-
sion of someone authorised to permit
such a thing. Actually the list of
protected plants has not been gazetted
because a representative committee
has yet to set down the names of the
plants in proper form, but evidently
the warning given some time ago to
persons who think they are entitled
to carry off what spoils they like —has
had useful effect. -
