PAKENHAM.
A meeting was held on Wednesday
night, in the Mechanics’ Hall, to con
sider community singing. There was
a fairly large attendance, and the
feeling was decidedly in favor of
going on with it.
Following on several complaints
made to the Hall Committee on the
roughness of the floor in the Insti
tute, the committee has decided to
repair the floor, and then plane the
whole of it with an electric planer.
This should make it one of the best
dancing floors in the Shire.
It is understood that old-time danc
ing is to be re-introduced at an early
date. Judging by the interest taken
in old-time dancing at present, we
should see a large gathering attend.
Owing to lack of accommodation at
the local bank, the bank manager and
his wife have to live some three miles
away from the Bank. This means a
lot of travelling to be done by Mr.
Missen each day. However,, tenders
were recently called for the erection
of suitable quarters at the rear-of the
Bank, and work will be proceeded with
during this week. The successful
tenderers come from Mitcham. Se
veral local carpenters tendered,. but
were unsuccessful.
The death is regretted here of Mr.
A. Downward, who represented the
Mornington district in the Legislative
Assembly for 35 years,' and who re
tired from active service last year.
His service in the State Parliament
had been of untold value to Victoria,
and his wide experience and liberal
outlook had gained him many friends
in all parties in the House. To the
sorrowing family deep sympathy from
all Pakenham friends has been ex
pressed.
