PAKENHAM.
The Deputy Coroner (David McAfee,
J.P.), held an inquiry last week
touching the death of Domenico Di
Donato, who was found in the house
of one of his countrymen, at Office
dale, with his throat cut. A verdict of
suicide whilst of unsound mind was
returned.
Monday, 24th (Eight Hours’ Day)
was not recognised as a, holiday by
the local justices, Messers Ahern. and
McAfee, who dealt with several motor
cases.
Orchardists are particularly busy
at present, and large shipments of
Jonathans are being sent away. This
looks very like a record season for
Pakenham, and the only regrettable
feature about the business is the low
prices oeing paid for first quality
fruit.
Another old resident (Mr. P. Mul
care) passed away at his residence,-
near Narnargoon, on Sunday last.
Deceased was, well known in the dis
trict. We extend our sympathy to
the sorrowing relatives and friends.
The ball, held on Monday evening,
the 24th inst., under the auspices of
the A.L.P., was a huge success, the
takings at the door being very gratify
ing.
The annual meeting of the recrea
tion ground was not held last week,
owing to the poor attendance. It was
decided to make another attempt to
get a meeting next week.
Correction. —Re paragraph in last
week’s issue, in regard to Hospital
meeting, it was made to appear that
the staff at present was: Two sisters,
1 probationer, 1 nurse, 1 cook, 1 laun
dress (six in all), instead of: Two
sisters, 1 probationer-nurse, 1 cook,
1 laundress (five in all).
