SUSPENSION OF TELEGRAPH
DEPARTMENT OFFICEKS.
SUPPOSED DEFALCATIONS.
Sydney, February 6.
Much surprise was occasioned to-night
by the suspension of two of the principal
officers <n the Electric Telegraph Depart,
ment pending au examination of their
books. During the recent inspection by
an officer ot the Treasury it was found
chat those officers were guilty of the
grossest irregularity, and it is exoected
that there will be found defalcations
which extend over a considerable period,
and involve a large sum of money made
up of small amounts misappropriated.
One of these officers has been connected
with the department over twenty years,
while the other was appointed some
three years ago. The investigations are
understood to implicate two more
officers. The irregularities are in connection
with the petty cash account, the
method adopted being to falsify by charging
messenger expenses which were
never incurred
