BERWICK COUNCIL
SHIRE WORKS.
Mr. H. L. Keys, engineer to the
Berwick Shire, reported to the last
meeting of the Council that it would
be possible to divert water from
near the Narre Warren State School
down the water table on the east side
to Prince’s Highway by raising the
culvert about five Inches, and making
the water table about 10 inches
deeper, for two or three chains op
posite the brick store.
He had met some of the ratepayers
interested in the drain on Upper Bea
consfield-road, and they promised to
consider the matter and let the Coun
cil know to what extent they would be
prepared to contribute towards the
proposed new drain.
Entrance to Mr. Funnell's tea rooms
at Upper Beaconsfield from the main
road had been cut off by the lowering
of the road, and Mr. Funnell asked
for an entrance from a side street.
This entrance would come into the
main road again a little below the
tea rooms.- Two 12inch pipe cul
verts and about three chains of clear
ing and forming, would be required,
and Mr. Funnell would do the whole
of the clearing, and also provide a
man, with horse and scoop, to assist
in the formation.
Ths old culvert near Toomuc Creek,
on the Upper Beaconsfield road, was
in a very bad state, and required new,
stringers and decking. Temporary
repairs had been effected, but the
bridge might break through at any
time. He recommended that re
newals be done by day labor.
Pipes for the new drain at Garfield
were delivered, and would be put in
as soon as an easement could be de
fined. It was proposed to brick’ the
lower portion of the drain, and it
would be advisable to fence this off
if an agreement could be made with
the owner.
Cr. Walsh and the writer met Mr.
Lupson, engineer to the Water Com
mission, at Cora Lynn, in connection
with the Council’s application for a
flood gate to take water from the
main channel to the new No. 4 drain.
Mr. Lupson said it was impossible
for the Commission to do this at pre
sent, as the works below were not
completed. The Commission, how
ever, proposed to put several gates on
the south side of the main channel
and divert some of the flood waters,
but this could not be done until the
drains below were enlarged suffi
ciently to deal with the extra water.
The report was received, and it was
decided to have the drainage at the
Narre Warren school attended to. An
entrance to Mr. Funnell’s tea rooms
at Upper Beaconsfield will be pro
vided, as recommended, and attention
will be given to the culvert at Toomuc
Creek. The Engineer’s recommenda
tions regarding the new drain at Gar
field were adopted.
