A HOME MISSION NEEDED.
The Sandhurst correspondent of the Age
writing on Monday, furnishes the following,
deplorable'picture of local immorality;—
“Mr Webster, P.M., attended at the lock-up
this morning, hut the only case brought be
fore him was that of a little girl,-aged
.years, named TeresBa > Riley, charged with
; vagrancy. The mother who is a charwoman,
residing at Iriahtown, stated that the child
waa entirely beyond her ooutiol, and when
she was sent to school went to the Chinese
camp instead. She had stayed in the camp
all night. Sergeant Webb elated it was not
altogether the child’s fault, as she had three
sisters already living with Chinamen, and un
less taken away, the prisoner would soon be
as bad as the others. The character of the
mother was none of the brightest and he had
warned her. The police magistrate said he
would not send the child to the Industrial
School, as she had not been proved to be a
vagrant, and had a mother to look after her.
It waa evident the mother wanted to get rid
of the girl, and after giving both a. severe
lecture she was discharged. _ -
