Mr. W. C. Smith will address his cciifititu-
cntaon Monday, 28th January, in the Alfred
Hall.
An influential deputation from tho Cluces
Consols Company, introduced by Mr. D.
Jirophy, M.L.A., waited upon tho Minis
ter of Miucs this morning to request a loan
of £3000 from the prospecting grant to aid
the company in their operations. It was
shown that the shareholders bad already
paid £S0,000in developing the mine, andMr.
Derbin Willder said tho company would ex
pend a sum equal to tbo loan granted.
Mr. W. C, Smith, in reply, acknowledged tho
importance of aiding companies like the
Ciunes Consols, Yvhicli were lielpftg to de-
volop new linos of reef, and would ulti
mately, if reasonably assisted, give per
manent employment to thousands of minors.
Ho (Mr. Smith) had always been in favor
of a prospecting loan, but £20,000 ivas alto-
gether iuadequato to render the needed as
sistance. Hero ivas a company, for instance,
which had expended £SO,000 in opening up a
new mining country, and desorre'd more
than ho could possibly advance from tho
paltry grant voted. Ho was of opinion that
£250,0U0 at least was needed, if permanent
and progressive mining ivas to be encouraged,
Already a largo proportion of tho £20,000
had been expended in the purchase of
the diamond drills, aud a3 a number
of applications ivere already received to
participate iu the remainder, he felt some
difficulty in deciding upon tlieir respective
claims. He would, however, appoint a board
of praotieal gentlemen, to bo selected from
tbo chief mining distriots, who would deal
ivith tho present and similar applioations.
The deputation then thanked the Minister
for his courtesy and withdrew.
The landlord of the Durham and Cumber
land Hotel had £9 stolen from a cashhox in
his bedroom, where he was sleeping, last
night.
