"The Fiji.Timwi' rej'thaYoq November 25 a
hbr'riblo'.outrage 'was committed by a Fijian named
Qaqa on tlie person of Mrs Isabella; Moore, the
daughter .of .Captain , Maughan, arid it is at present
doubtful "it tlio uufortunato lady will survive the
injuries" that, "have been ''inflicted ori-, her. . On the
.afternoon ' of the day in question,. Mrs Moore was
sittio'a'dri the verandah of her bous'e, at Waidau, at
'tije back of the island, engaged ,, with some fancy

this with other blows, in attempting to ward off
which!' the defenceless woman received fearful iri-
juries to her arms arid hands. She then fell down
apd tho misoreant, to complete his murderous
work, struck her another savage blow on the back
arid 'then left her for dead. After his departure
Mrs Mooro contrived to crawl to a moli tree, un.der
which she fainted. On recovering she managed to
-return to the house and obtain somp spirits, portion
of which Rite drank, and then, hearing the noise of
someono noar, she took the bottle and started to
reach hor father's house, some three miles distant.
With almost incredible courage and strength of
purpose she dragged horself ouward, keeping up
her failing strength with the stimulant till she
readied a creek which it was necessary to cross.
Here aha meet Bome Fijiaus, and, telling what had
occurred, she asked thorn to carry hor over the
creek, but this the inhuman wretohes refused to do
unless she ivould givo them LI. She promised
them in the names of her father and her huBband
iiny number of pounds they wanted if they would
but holp her, but as she had no money with her
they refused and left hor to shift for herself. At
tlio last extremity of exhaustion alio roached her
father's door, and after doing what it was possible
to do on the moment, the boat was got ready and
lata at uight the mutilated victim was brought to
Iievuka. Her wounds were at once attended to
by Dr. Ghio, and slio was removed to the hospital,
whero she lies iri "a precarious condition, with but
faint hopes of her recovery. Her fieudish assailant
wa3 arrested and broueht into town on the follow
ing day, and he was brought before the court and
remanded for eight days. The man is' said to be
mad, and this is borne out by tho fact that he fiercely
: attacked the police-in the station more ' than 'once,
and broke three pairs of handcuffs in succession as
fast as they- wero pnt on Hirn. On noother assump
tion can this savage attack be accounted for,
thoagh there are various rumourB afloat about land
disputes, which we are assured, are without founda
tion. What makes the tragic occurrence the uiore
sad is that the uufortunato lady had only been
married ten days when this brutal attack was made
on her.
