The' usual monthly ''? meeting of the
Latrobe Band of Hope was held in;;the
Oddfellows' Hall last night. . It ;being,
beautifully .moonlight the attendance, if
anything, was larger than usual. Eev. T.
G-. White occupied the chair, and an exoel
lent Droeramme of songs, music, recita
tions, etc., was gone through, .the manner in
which many of the children presented their
pieces being very favourably commented
upon. Reference was made to Mr Ford, who
is severing his connection with the work
owing to leaving : the district. ' Mr White,
Mr Hainsworth, and others gave him great
praise for his valuable assistance.
A much needed work is now being done
by the road trust in taking up the old
wooden drain across Gilbert-street at the
lower end of the town (which had become
choked up), and laying down large drain
pipes : in place. This will add greatly to
the sanitary condition of that part of the
town. i
- At the police court this morning before
Mr P. 0. Maxwell, P.M., and Mr M. Nathan;
J.P., Mrs L. ; Mitchell pleaded guilty to
having exposed for sale pears infected
with the codlin moth, and was fined 103
and costs.— William ; Innis, for Belling
pears infected with codlin moth to the
previous defendant, was mulcted in a like
sum.— A. W. Johnston, for resisting Con
stable J. W. Waterman in the execution of
his duty, pleaded guilty, and was fined
£1, in default 14 days' imprisonment.
The weather of late has been very
wintry, and culminated last night in a
white frost. To-day it has been evident
by the leaden sky and cold that snow was
falling on the ranges. Bain set in about
4 p.m., and there is every appearance of a
heavy fall. .. ,
