WANGARATTA POLICE COURT.
Wednesday, Jan. 22.
(Before Messrs. McKay and Pinkortoh,

A young man, in a very weak state of
health, was brought up from Glenrbwaii,/
by Constable Gove, charged with break
ing into the house of Mr. Down, and
stealing therefrom.
Constable Gove stated that Mr. Down
was a railway-line repairer at South Wan
I garatta. On Tuesday lie saw prisoner a
short distance from the' gate-house in
which he lived. Prisoner had a German
sausage and a knife ill his hand. Down
asked him where lie got the sausage, and
the prisoner answered, " I stole it down
at the house. " He was then ordered away,
and lie left the railway line. Down then
returned to the gate-house, and
discovered that the gate-house had been
broken into. The window was broken open
and some German sausage that was hang
ing up in the house had been stolen.
Prisoner was followed, and on being over
taken admitted having broken into tlie
house aud stolen the sausage. He said
his reason for doing so 'wiis that he was
hungry. Prisoner was given in charge
by Mr. Down.

night; tlie prisoner, who had been in the
Wangaratta Hospital, was very ill, and lie
now wished . with the consent of Mr.
Down to withdraw the charge of stealing
and prefer one of vagrancy, in order that
the prisoner who had no property what
ever,. except tiie clothes he was staiuliug
in, might be sent to gaol for medical
treatment
Prisoner pleaded guilty to the charge
of vagrancy, and tlie Bench sentenced linn
to one month's imprisonment, as they
stated more for the reason that he might
receiveinedical treatment and be taken carc
of than as a -punishment.
Tlie court then adjourned.
St. Patrick's Day.— Tlie forthcoming
festival of Ireland's patron >"aiiit is not to
be permitted to pass without appropriate
celebration in Beechworth. As will he
seen by advertisement the St. Joseph's
Branch of the H. A.C. B.S. are taking the
matter in hand, and a meeting wijl beheld
at the school-room on Thursday eveniii"
for the purpose of deciding on the form that
the celebration shall take, and making
arrangements to -carry' out the decision!
The matter could not be in better hands.
An Appeal for Help. — By advertise
ment iu another column the Ladies'
Benevolent Society make an appeal to the
charitably disposed for assistance to
James Bacon and his family, the
whole of whose clothing and effects
were destroyed by the fire which consumed
their dwelling at - Hurdle' Flat. The case is
an entirely deserving one, and we are sure
the appeal to public sympathy will be
generously responded to. '

The Wangaratta Half-holiday association
and a number of the business people of
Wangaratta who are supporters of the by
law -which provides a half-holiday within
the borough every Wednesday are in
dignant at the action of the Commercial
Travellers'. Association in agitating to have
the.-half-holiday in country towns clone
away with. It is pointed out that the
trades-people should -be allowed to arrange
their own hours of business, and nob be
subject to the convenience of the ' com
