MINING INTELLIGENCE.
/ .The air-receiver was delivered at the Ajax on
Thursday, to-day the air-compressor will arrive,
and by . Wednesday week the whole should.be
fitted up. All this looks like business, and
should lead to a grand result. The shaft has
been Blink by hand-labour 10 feet, but when the
rock-borer is Bet to work, the progress will he
'hreefold. Almoat simultaneously the Wattle
Gully Company will commence sinking ; and
some interest will be attached to the respective
operations in these mines. Their plaoB are
different, the Ajax will sink perpendicularly,
the Wattle Gully on the underlie, and both hold
out the prospect of attaining to greater depths
than yet reached in this mining division. .In
the future of both the public has the greatest con
fidence and the greatest hopes, and the success
which may be attained by either, may ' be
sufficient to dispel the gloom (to use the words
of the Minister of Mines) that hangs over
mining. The opinion expressed by him and
Mayor Coachman that the reefs of this distriot
have as good indications as those of Sandhurst,
and should be as rich, is deserving of. notice,
but as the 'Minister remarked, our companies
had not deserved success, as they had only
scratohed the BUrface. Our deepest mines would
be considered shallow on Sandhurst. Another
company that may have something worthy to
record at an early date, is the Grand Trunk
Company at Guildford. They tested some wash
last week of a most encouraging kind, but
shortly after doing so met with the first accident
that has occurred at the claim. This was the
hauling of a truck up to the poppet heads, which
caused a breakage and a delay of a couple of days
in effecting repairs. The Perseverance Company
at Chowton, after a long continuance of steady,
unrequited labour, Btruck gold last ThursdAjr,
and obtained specimens that were encouraging
in themselves, but far more so for what they in
dicated, as they are regarded as leaders to th'e
rich block of atone in the Argus Company, which
for body and yield is the best in the division.
From the last olearing-up tile share
holders divided L14 a man, after paying all
expenses. The Renaissance tributers had 8 8z
14 dwts for their cleaning up on Saturday, The
crosscut in tho Ferron's Reef was extended 3L
feet for the fortnight, making it 64 feet from the
shaft. It passed through quartz and slate, and
a quantity of the former has been reserved for
crushing. The yields of the Now Era and the
Tribute for the fortnight, wore both improve
ments on tho preceding. In the Company's claim
the No. 4 level has been extended 25 feet to tho
north, and 25 foot to tho south ; the No., 5
lovel 25 fedt to the south ; and the No. 2 25 feet.
The English Australian Company's return is
again profitable, and the shareholders in England
are disposed to spend more money in developing
the mine if the legal manager approved of it,
but ho wishes to proceed cautiously, and
furthor test the ground, before recommending
an outlay of furthor capital. At tho expiration
of ono month mining leases will be forwarded to
D. Clifton and another for tho Devonshire Reof,
and to E, D. Williams and another, Tartan-
gowor. .
United Ajax Company. — Good progress has
boon made in tho shaft during the fortnight.

ing. The air pipos aro fixed in the sliaft, and
tho receiver is on tho ground. A small tribute
orushing gave 6oz 3k dwt. Maohinery all in
good order, and everything working well.
Prince of Wales Company, Mia Mia.— The
manager reports having broken some 50 tons of
stone for the battory, and is now orushing, and
will raise some 50 tons more and put through
the passes before oleaning-up. The manager is
of opinion that the quartz now being raised will
pay;
Mr Thos. Symons, mining manager of , the
Ellis's Freehold G. M. Company, reports under
date June 3rd This mine is . opening up very
slowly, at present, owing to the troublesome
natureof the1 ground, oausod by the drift 'over

Golden Eaglo, Fry era Creek.- — The south' level
has been extondod during the week, the quartz
appearing about' the Bame. Cleaning up' will,
(uko place next Friday. A reef four feet thick
has been mot with more easterly than we have
yet worked, and a trial orushing will be taken
from this separately. The underlie is easterly
on a fluoan, and which; will be driven on north
and south. A rise is going up from the bottom
crosscut to ventilate the upper, ground, and
facilitate the working of this portion of the
mind. ' ' ;

quartz is showing overhead,' . from which is
flowing a large, stream of water!. Ab- Boon as
contractors have finished driving this level, the
reef now overhead will be worked, and put
throughjhe battery. A contract has been let to
four men to drive 50, feet ease at same level,
they are now- in eight feet, from shaft! and - have
fair ground, _ with quartz leaders showing. The
north level is also being- extended ; and fair pro

in good condition.

I greatly improved,; the south level on course -of
the. load has been extended 12 feet,' the s(ibnetin:

also beenidriven 10 feet in' the;Bame time, the
quartz looking' very- well. '- A good ladder way
has been put in during this fortnight.
