DUMMYISM IN THE SOUTH-EAST.
Eighteenselectors, holding land underthirty
distinct agreements, are requested by this
week's Gazette to take notice that it has been
shown to the satisfaction of His Excellency
the Governor in Executive Council that they
; have violated one of the conditions of their
compact, inasmuch as they have not continued
to reside on their selections in terms
of the regulations made under the Land Act.
They are further informed that, in consequence
of this default, it is intended to revoke
their agreements, but before the revocation
takes effect they are to have the opportunity
of appearing before a tribunal consisting
of Messrs. S. Beddome, W. R.
Boothby, and A. B. Cooper, to be held in
the Local Court Buildings, Adelaide, on a
day specified.
TW proceedings thus initiated are the
first-fruits of a strict rnterpretatioa of the
Laud Act as it now exists. Eighteen persons
have by solemn agreement bound themselves
to reside upon the allotments of land
selected by them in a certain agricultural
area, and the allegation against them is that
they have neglected to comply with this
requirement. For various periods in excess
of the fifteen months for which the resir
dence condition is constructively suspended
these selectors have been the holders of
seventy-seven sections, containing in the
aggregate 8,515 acres, or thereabouts, and, so
far as official accusatipn goes, they are continuing
to hold them as trespassers. At
present they have not been heard in selfdefence,
and it would be unjust to prejudge
their cause; but it is impossible to say that
, all the persons named in the list given below
belong to the class of bona fide cultivators of
the soil, for whose especial benefit the agricultural
area system was instituted. . Six out
of the eighteen selectors who have come
under Ihe suspicion of the law are ladies,
and far be it from us to dispute their title to
be qajled genuine farmers until the triumvirate
appointed to try the question has
; reported; but of the other thirteen five
or {fix at least are well-to-do sheepfarmers
with, residences pf their own, which they
are not at all likely to leave in order to go
through the rough life of -a-settler upon a
new holding. It is somewhat significant
that there are Only nine different surnames
in the list of selectors.. There are. .five
Robertsons, four <5uthries, three Rylands;
and these families monopolize nearly 6,000
out of the 8,515 acres. . Of course, undprthe
. Act; there was no alternative for an honest
or prudent Commissioner of Crown Lands
but to take ihe course that Mr. Blyth has
now done, and the opportunity is a very
favourable one to set at rest, the question
of whether the residence clause is to be
respected or permitted. to remain a dead
