PUBLIC MEETING AT PRAHRAN.
A public meeting of the citizens of Frahr&u,
convened by the mayor, Mr, J. W. Forbes, was
held in tho local town hall last evening for
tbe purpose of establishing a fund to assist in
tbe relief of the sufferers by the accident at
the Bulli coal mine, New South Wales.
Tho mayor, who occupied the chair, stated
that one of the purposes of tho meeting was to
afford the subscribers to the Wiudsor Fire
: Relief Fund tho opportunity of saying whether
the surplus iu hand, about £100, after pay
ing all demands mado upon it, should
be handed over to tho Bulli relief fund.
On tho motion of Mr. J. Williams
it was resolved that the amount should bo
added to any fund collected in Prahran for the
relief of the sufferers through the explosion in
the 11 <11 coal mine. The mayor then addressed
the mooting on the subject' of this recent dis
aster, and called upon Mr. . M. If. Davies to
move the first resolution. In doing so Mr.
Davies regrotted tbo paucity of attendance, a
circumstance ho considered not due to any
want of sympathy, but 10 the fact that it was
not generally understood the meeting was to
be a public one. He moved, 41 That the
citizens of Prahran desire to express thoir
heartfelt aud deep sympathy for the
widows and orphans left destitute by the
lato most lamentable colliery explosion at Bulli,

sufferers," He hoped that the fund raised in
Prahran would be one of which they would not
be ashamed. The resolution was seconded by
Mr. E. J. Dixon, who expressed himself satis
fied that tho mere fact ol the accident having
taken place in another colony would have
110 effect on the contributions of the
public. The feeling of sympathy was
deep, and there was no such jealousy
existing as that which was sometimes' attri
buted to them. Tho motion was duly carried.
Tbe Mayor announced that iio had received
letters of apology for non-attendancn from Dr.
Watkin, Mr. Justice a'Beckott, Mr. G. D.
Carter and Professor Morris, all of whom, bow-
ever, forwarded substantial contributions. The

lor, as follows That subscription lists be
circulated through the city, and a committee
appointed to carry put the foregoing resolu
tions." This was seconded by Mr. S. M. Dal-
ton aud carried. Tho Mayor announced tho
receipt of a cheque of £25 from Cr. Taylor
towards the fund. It was not, ho said, intended
to open big subscription lists, but that rather
tho contributions should be small and
numerous. Vt the close of the meeting it wan
stated that tho amount received exceeded
£154, including the sum of £100 handed over
from tho Wiudsor Fire Relief Fund.
