ANNUAL DINNER IN LONDON.-
ENCOURAGEMENT OF IMMIGRA-
TION.

The . unmial TV estern Australian dinner,
was held at the Trocadcro last coning. Sir
Newton Moore, Agent-General for ".Vesteni
Australia, presided, and the attendance
numbered 200. Among those present were
Sir Arthur Lawley, formerly Governor of
the State; Sir' John Anderson, Permanent
Under-Secretary for the Colonies; Mr.
Robert Pliilp,. ox-Premier of Queensland;
Air. Gerald Smith, director of the Union of
London and Smith's banks; and tho
Agents-General for tlie Australian States.
Sir Arthur Lawley proposed the toast of
Western Australia. -.Sir Newton Moore,
in replying, read a .telegram from Air.
Scuddau, Premier . of. Western Australia,
whose allusions to the advisability of en
couraging tlio emigration to the Slate of
suitable people were roundly cheered. Sir
