: THE HOUSE OF CUMBERLAND.
Prince' George of Ciimbo'rlnnd was the"
second child and eldest eon; of the third
Duke of Cumberland. The first Duke was-
a younger son of George' I'll., and suc-
ceeded to the throne of Hanover upon tho
accession '"of Queen Victoria to the' throne,
of the United Kingdom, tho Salic law
being in force in Hanover. The present
Duke is thus the head. of the House of
Brunswick. "He married Tliyra of Dcn-_
murk, tlie youngest sister of Queen Ali'X;
andra and the Dowager-Empress Mario of
Russin, and they have three daughters and'
two sons. ' -
Prince George was born on 28th October,
.1880,. and was a captain in tho Austrian
42nd Infantry Regiment. lie was generally
considered to he Queen Alexandra's favo
rite nephew, and stayed with her Majesty
at King George's coronation. His second
sister, Alexandra, in. 1904 married - the
reigning Grand Duke of. Mecklenburg-
Selnvcrin, and the unfortunate Prince had
been visiting his sister and -brother-in-law.
Prince Ernest Augustus, bom in 1887,
. now ' -becomes the heir to the family's
claims on the kingdom , of Hanover, iiri-
nexed by Prussia, in I860, and to the Dncliy
of BrmisWiek. made a regency by the Ger-
inan Empire beeniisc the Duke of Cumber
land refused to abjure, his rights to Han
over. If lie Would, do so,. Prussia would
not object to his snceeeding to tl'e duchy.
Oif .the deatlr of -tlie first .Regent of Bruns
wick, the Duke of Cumberland . was willing,
to allow either of- his sons to accept the
dnoliy, but lie declined to abjure -his Han
overian claims, and so Prussia appointed'
another Regent. ' . ; :
