MINERS' FEARFUL DEATH.
FALL DOWN A SHAFT.
ONE BODY CUT TO PIECES.
BROKEN IIILL, Friday.
A double fatality occurred at the North
mine this morning." Two men, Louis Mara-
ehettil and Michael 'Murphy, were avit'h
eleven other mind's coming to the surface
in a cage after the . night shift. They left
the I10B feet level sately, and when up
some distance 'Marachettil and 'Murphy fell
out of the cage. No clear statement given
so far enables a decision to be arrived at
us to tlie exact portion of the shaft the
cage avas in when, the accident happened:
but tlie surmise thnt the men were nt the
700' feet level is stated to be founded on u
report that there was some play going on
about that level, in which some of the men
in the. eage joined. Naturally, a great deal
of reticence is observed by those who are
in a 'position to know most about the acci
dent. .
The bodies were terribly "injured from
tlie effects .of the fall. That of Murphy
suffered less than Hie other. Marncliettil'o
remains were fearfully dismembered,
doubtless through having - struck projec
tions of shaft timbers during the fearful
fan to the bottom. It was not until about
midday thnt the whole of '-Murachettil's
body was found. - ;
Work underground at "the mine lias been
suspended since the time of the accident,
the day shift men, ivho were ready to de
scend on tlie arrival on the surface of the
men who had put "in the niglit shift,
being informed that their services avere
not required-for tlie day.
A11 inquest will be held to-morrow morn-
nig. '
Two miners who, were riding in the cage
witii deceased said they got in tlie cage
us usual to ascend, after having completed
the shift. The cage was- ' "knocked
away in the ordinary manner, but
they had a very rough lido— mueh
rougher than customary. While going
! shflft, one of the men called out,
there s one man gone." That was all
that was known oftlie accident until tlitiv
got to the surface, when it was found two
men were missing. The cage was running
smoothly until the 950 feet plat light came
in eight; t then the motion ascending whs
marked by short jerks, und soon after the
950 feet, level was pnsised a particularly
sharp jerk came. "
