The Govcrnor-Gcheral, who; -took up his
residence at Marble Hill, tlie summer resi
dence of the Soutli Australian Governor,'
has expressed himself "us ' being charmed
with the position of the house and the sur-
rounding country. In a letter to the. Act;
ing-Premier of. South Australia be says:—
"J- havo no. words to express my admira
tion and delight: with everything. I . have
seen." ."V .
; . Sir .( Thomas and' Lady , Gibson , Car-
michaei paid a visit of inspection to.
the Try Society recently, and spent an
evening inspecting- the various branches of
the work. His Excellency has since entered
.the following report in the society's visitors'
book: — "Lady Carmichacl and .1 spent .the
evening of 18th December at the Try , So
ciety, -and were very much -pleiised: with all
we saw. l ied sure that the 'institution
must be doing good' not. only to the boys
who:are attending it, but, -to,' those amongst
whom they live. The swimming bath, was
evidently very popular; in - the 'hot weather
tlmt alone would be evidencp to any visi tors
that the 'boys appreciate what is being done:
for them, but all: the other rooms wero
filled in a .way that', showed -that every,
branch of tho work is attractive. I do not.
think that-anyone could: fail to be struck,
and only hope that many will visit it. - I;
quite agree with what Sir. Reginald Talbot
has written as to thanks being due to Mr.
Forstcr and his staff of workers."
On 20th November, by request, the
American consul, Mr. John F. Jewell/
sent the following congratulatory cable
gram to President-elect TafL, viz.: — "The;
American residents of Melbourne, at a
thanksgiving flintier, "send .congratulations)
oh your 'election to the . Presidency." Air.;
Jewell hits just received the following let-,
ler in acknowledgment of his cablegram,'

We learn by cable from our London cor
respondent that Madame Afclba, who will
arrive in Atelbournc in the R.M.S. Orontes
on 3rd March next, and enter upon a con
cert lour of the Commonwealth, is pro
ceeding to 'Naples in order to sing on be
half of the sufferers by the "recent earth
quake catastrophe in, Sicily . and Southern;

The funeral of the late Air. John Leahy,
Speaker of the Queensland Legislative
Assembly, took place : at Brisbane ' yester
day. All vehicular and horse traffic in
the streets through which the .procession
passed was suspended. The coffin was
borne on a gun carriage and was covered
with the' Union Jack. Alany thousands of
people gathered at the graveside.
Advices to hand. by. this week's mail, show
that Alias Amy Castles is steadily winning
her way to fame and favor in the old .land.
She is engaged for 'the best concerts in
London and the .provinces and. on the Con
tinent, and the press criticisms of her voice',
and art are of a highly appreciative nature.
The Royal Amateur Orchestral Society, a
very select body, of which his Majesty the
King is president and tho Prince of Wales
vice-president, gave recently a grand orches
tral concert in the Queen 's Hall, and Aliss
Castles was the.. sole vocalist. Tho ball was
packed, and. the artist got-a most enthusias
tic reception. The Chief Justice, of Eng
land presented Alias Castles with a mag
nificent 11 oral tribute. "Aliss Castles com
mences her Australian tour next September
in Alelbourne.
Archdeacon Hindley, V.G., -yesterday re
ceived intimation from the Trinity Uni
versity, Toronto, that the, corporation of
Trinity College by a unanimous vote, taken
by ballot, had passed a recbmmendatiop
to confer, on him ' the degree, of bachelor of
divinity. - The cpmmunieatipni.explains .thai,
"no' degrees are conferred -in absentii, and
points out that it will -be. necessary for the
archdeacon to present himself at the uni
versity to receive the distinction. The Arch
bishop .of Toronto by the same mail writes
expressing the hope that Archdeacon Hind-
ley will find it possible to pay a visit to
Toronto in order" "that he may have the
honor of welcoming a churchman who has
done such distinguished service for his dio-
cese in the sister" colony." The intimation
came;ns a -complete, surprise to Archdeacon
Hindley, as he had had no 'communication,
either indirectly or otherwise, with the
authorities of the Toronto University, or
with the archbishop. The archdeacon leaves
for England on Tuesday next, and at the
conclusion of his tour of Great Britain pur
poses visiting Toronto to present himself
at the university, in accordance' with the
request of the authorities, to receive the
distinction. The Toronto University lias
not conferred the degree of B.D. in similar
circumstances" on ahy other clergyman in
the Commonwealth. Aluch gratification is
expressed in Anglican circles at the dis
tinction gained by Archdeacon Hindley,
who is highly esteemed in the diocese,, and
yesterday he was the recipient of numerous
congratulatory messages from his many
friends and acquaintances.
Sir Thomas" J. Lipton, whose enthusiastic
interest in yachting has been demonstrated
by his repeated efforts to win. for England
the America Cup, has donated a silver cup,
valued at" '50, guineas, 'to the.-Royal Yacht
Club of; Victoria for open competition
amongst the yachtsmen of tlie State. Sir
Thomas Lipton lias expressed a desire' that
the trophy be manufactured in Australia
of Australian silver, and he has entrusted
the work to Alessrs. H. Newman and Sons,
jewellers. . '
"Senator Sir Robert Best has received a
letter from Airs. Doubleday, whicli states
.that on 12th December . last an invitation
'concert' was given 'in- Vienna -by mombers
of the Anglo-American Club. to celebrate
the opening of their new rboms. There
were many distinguished people present,
including the Duke and Duchess of Tpek,
the American ambassador, members of the
English embassy, kc. Miss Leila Double-
day gave several violin items, and at the
close of the performance the Duchess, of
Teck ' congratulated her cordially on her
pronounced success.
The Rev, R. Keith. Mackay,1 minister of

and a prominent, officer., in the Rcchabite
Order, has been .suffering from conjunctivi
tis arid ulceration of the eye ' during the

tal committee yesterday a .'letter was re
ceived from Dr. Binnock resigning his
position as- assistant- resident surgeon of
tlie midwifery department of the' institu
tion. ' The' -resignation" was accepted with

hock, who was for some time resident stir-
geon of the - infirmary department, is :. a
candidate for the position of. surgeon of the
Ballarat Hospital.

Mr. J. A. Scott, M.D., M.S., of Auburn,
who recently visited Great Britain for tho
purpose of pursuing Mb professional studies
and passing examinations, has received
notification of his admission (to the fellow
ship of the Royal College of Surgeons,
Edinburgh.
There died on Thursday, evening at
his residence, 'James-street, Northcote
at the early age of 43, Mr. Charles
Kemp - Jamicson, of the firm of
Messrs.: Haddock and Jamicson, solicitors,
dec.; Collins-street, ""city. Up till threo
months ago. Mr. Jamieson led a very busy
life, not only taking an active rihare in the
city business and in suburban police court
work, but superintending the .firm's branch
at 'Daylceford, of whicli town he was a
native. His breakdown, then, was very sud-
, den. Believing himself to be just run down
he consulted a medical man, who found
him to bo suffering from serious heart trou-
ble. He has been an: invalid ever since, and
death resulted from . exhaustion after a
severe coughing fit on Thursday night. Tho
deceased gentleman was unmarried, and his
mother and family reside at Williamstown.
Three of his brothers are officers in tho
Bank of Victoria, arid one is a marine
officer. The interment: wiii be at, ctic Wil
liamstown cemetery this afternoon.
