THE QUEENSLAND TRANSPORT.
FITTED UP BY NON-UNIONISTS.
BRISBANE, Tuesday.
Captain Long, of the steamer Duke of
Portland, which is about to convey the
Queensland Contingent to South Africa, was
entertained by a number of citizens at lun-
cheon on the steamer to-day. Among the
guests were the Ministry, several other
members of Parliament and a number of
prominent members of the mercantile com
munity. Several toasts were honored. Mr.
I'liilp, the Premier, eulogised the loyalty
displayed by the colonies. Mr. Chataway
stated that the vessel was taking 2500 tons
of Queensland coal to South Africa. Mr.
Dalrymple took occasion while aboard to
address a number of non-unionists, who are
fitting up the Duke of Portland for the
troops, on the subject of their treatment
by the union to which they formerly be
longed. They had been fined for working
with non-unionists in fitting up the steamer
Cornwall for the first contingent, and, hav
ing refused to pay the fine, they were boy
cotted by the union, and deprived of the
benefits of 10 years' subscriptions to it. Mr.
Dalrymple said the public were with the
non-unionists in the matter inasmuch as
they had gone over to assist the Govern
ment so that Quecnslanders could take their
place amongst the sons of the Empire. If
it came to a question of blacklegging on the
union, or blacklegging on one's country, by
all means let.- them blackleg nn file union.
A subscription was opened for these men
and £14 14/ was collected aboard the Duke
of Portland.
