'192 isn't
too far'
"Anyone who can't
ride 192 miles on the
last day shouldn't be in
the Sydney-Melbourne
road race."
Thus commented oldtimer
J. J. Beasley on
criticism of the promoters
for routing; the last
day's racing through
Ballarat and Geelong
from Bendigo.
"It's a downgrade run
on perfect roads," Beasley
said. "In the Centenary
Thousand riders
had to cover 220 miles
through the toughest
country in the State,
then saddle up next dav
for the Sale-Melbourne
stage.
"It's a test of speed
and endurance. Those
who don't relish the
prospect of covering the
miles don't have to
accept the invitation to
compete."
