THE SYDNEY TEA M LINES.
Ey Speoial Wise.— From Our Correspon
dent.)
SYDNEY, Thursday.
Speaking at tlio annual picnio of tho Tramway
department to-day, Mr. Goodohap, Commis
sioner for Railways; said it. might bo thought
judicious to initiate a proposal, nnd oven to call
for offers for leasing tlio tramways, but it- was
comforting to know that no offer of tho kind
could be definitely accepted without I'arlia-
incntary consent. Under any circumstances
there sucuiod to he an opiuion that stoaui tram
ways should give placo to cablo trams. He
did not think the conditions ot tho city
would permit of this. Whether the Govern
ment carried out tho cable system,
or whether it was carried out hy n private com
pany, it would certainly mean no diminution in
the present staff, for the number of passengers
now travelling by tiie present cars would
necessitate tliu running of additional cable cars,
whioh would be smaller, rcqui'iug '.lie staff to be
increa-.-'l by 25 per cent. Mr. Schey, M.P
thoug',.. that Parliament would not let the tram
ways pnss out of the hnuds of the State. He
would oppose tho proposal tooth and nail an
It was against public interests.
