BRISBANE. Fridav.
In tlie Legislative Assembly to-night tho
tariff proposals wero further considered. There
was a long and acrimonious debate on thu amend
ment to reduce duty on tlieminingmnchinoiyduty
from 15 to 5 per cent., and it wns negatived bv
38 to 21 votes. Sir S. Griffith thereupon moved
that tho duty on all machinery imported north
of Capo l'nhnerston be 5 per cent. Tills raised
the question of territorial separation, and pro
voked a long and angry discussion. Sir Thomas
M'llwraitli explained that tho amendment was
impossible, and that it would result in fixing a
definite line of demarcation between tho north
nnd tlic south, and thus hasten on separation.
The subject involved serious complications, and
evoked a principle 'wholly, nt variance with the
tnriff proposals. The amendment wns nega
tived by 37 to 20 votes. Good progress was
then made with the tnriff.
