PENGUIN.
Valedictory.
Mr, and Mrs. Browuell and child
left lor Hobart on Tuesday. Mr.
and ns such will be .greatly missed.
Brownell was our only local chemist,
lie has bought a business im Hobart,
where lie and Mrs. Brownell belong,
and good wishes for their future follow
them In their new venture. Mir.
and Jiis. Brownell took a prominent
part In church work, Mrs. Brownell
taking much interest In the junior Endeavor
section, and tbe members in
farewelling her last week made her a
handsome present, -which was feelingly
acknowledged.
Suspicious Fires.
Tlie once bulsy outlying settlement
at Ellenlon, cn the Blytlie road, more
commonly known as the "Copper
King" mine, lias fallen upon evil days,
and but little of a mining nature is
carried on there now. Consequently
the houses and stores erected to meet
the wants of a large population tare
no longer needed or tenanted, and ns
oftten happens in isuch cases mysterious
fires have broken out and destroyoa
a number of them from time
to time. Some occurred recently,
when half-dozen miners' huts wore
burned to tlie ground en bloc. It Is
understood they were fairly well inured
by the owner.
Fire Brigade.
The mention of fires reminds one
that there has not been much Interest
shown in tlie suggestions made for
the establishment of a fire brigade at
Penguin, it is a very necessary Institution,
for the -want of such a governing
body ha,s been much felt in
fires in the past, and now that we
have a good supply of water laid on
to tlie town there should not he much
difficulty in forming a brigade. There
are some splendid and enthusiastic
fire-fighters amongst our young men,
and one is sure that there -would be
plenty of applicants tor enrolment
Perhaps if tlie Warden were to call a
meeting to discuES this matter something
practical would follow.
Cricbet.
The Penguin senior cricket club has
always won much credit and renown
for iits prowess on the field, some of
Its members occupying a prominent
plane in coastal cricket circles, both
for bowling, batting, and fielding abilities.
Tlie annual meeting just held
shows the club to be full of enthusiasm
and eager to enter upon the new
season's play, albeit they will be
•shorn of some of their last year's
strength, both in batting and bowling.
The club is fortunate In having a live
secretary in Mr. G. G. Pullen, . for.
starting with a debit balance of £4
10/, he finished up with a credit balance
of £1/10/—an unusual experience
or a cricket club, and therefore worth
noting. It Is needless to say ho was
e-elected. The'club, both in Its eeiiloind
junior division, has decided to
ontinue under the Wast Devon Association
wing, the W.Ds. being the
crack country teann of the coast in
niBr-ossociatlon matches. As thsre are
goodly number of "has-beens"
he district there is sonua talk ot formng
an old buffers' club ibo join issue
ith tlie veterans of Ulverstone and
urnie, both good teams, but no beter
than Teuguln could put in the field
f put to the tiest, and it is hoped they
ay be, and tlitat soon.
Iron Mines.
The promise of tlie Minister for
ands that the agitation for opening
road up the valley of Penguin
reek^ so as'to assist in itlie developent
of the iron mines, would be furhered
as much as poissible, lias b«n
ell kept a sum of £200 having been
laced on the estimates for (the purose
of acquiring tbe land. This is
ery encouraging to residents, who
ope there will bo no Parliamentary
pposition to the vote.
