At 4. p.m.' the wind came up strongly . from the
south, ilnd the mercury fell rapidly. The night
was cool. On Sunday u heavy thunder storm
occurred. . "

no indications of' a change, and an outbreak, of
hewvy bush fires is feared. . ,A few fires have oc-

MARYBOROUGH.— A welcome change from the
intense heat occurred on Saturday .night, n heavy
thunder storm taking place. During the day the.
thermometer reached 102 deg., making the seventh
consefcutive day over 100 deg/' During the course
of the storm the lightning set the fire alarm ring
ing, and the -firemen -were calHid' out.-
.MIRBOO NORTH.— The climax of the. heat wava .
was reached on Friday, when the thermometers
registered 110. Cattle were to be seen lying iu
any shade they could get, beads of sweat dripping
from their 'nostril. Birds, with wings spread out
and beaks open, came iu.at the open doors and
windows, lying down with exhaustion., Men work
ing at the iron mine, at' hammer and' drill work
in un open cut, had lo abandon, work, the drill
becoming too .hot to hold- On Saturday there
was a .drop of Id deg. .in Ure temperaturQ.
MURC1I1SON.— Seldom, it ever, lias this district
been visited with such continuous and 'excessive
heat. For six days the register has shown from
104 to 109 in lire shade, Ure latter .being Friday's
record. Saturday, was the most disagreeable ol'
all, though. the heai was about 4 deg. less than
on Friday.
RENSHURST.— The temperature for .tlie last six
days has been over- 100. A cool change set in on
.Sunday morning from the south-west, accom
panied with hesivy rain.
PORT FAIRY. — Beautiful rain fell on Sunday
There is promise of a further . fall.
ST. ARNAUD.— A very , acceptable cool change
set in on Saturday, after a week's excessive heat,
the average shade register for 'six days being 10a)
deg.
TARNAGUIJjA.— The spell of hot weather con
tinues, and it .is tire longest period without a
break which has been experienced here, the ther
mometer ranging from 100 deg. up to 109 deg.
for eight days in succe«ion. On Friday 109 dog.
wus registered, hut on Saturday it was slightly
cooler, the ' mercury only rising to JOt deg.
TRARALiGON. — After another warm day tlio
wind changed about 4 p.m., and the atmosphere
became a little cooler. The extreme heat has
cawed a deal of colic.
TUNGAMAII. — The intense heat of the past
week lias been accountable for the death. of .seve
ral horses throughout the district. . 'A. valuable
horse belonging to Mr. Bvcritt, Wilby, after hav
ing drawn a load of wood to the butter factory,
dropped dead,, the cause being attributed to 'SUtt«
