DANGERS OF LIFTS.

Mr. Chandler held an inquest on Friday regard
ing the .death of Alfred William Minty, aged 10,
who was killed in n lift on Tuesday.
Alexander Fnirlie,' driver for Messrs. Edwards and
Co., Flinders-street, stated tlmt he found de-
ceased on the lift of tlie firm's warehouse. The
body was jammed between tlie door frame on tho
first floor and Ihc bottom of the lift. Witness
thought deceased had tried to get oil tlio lift, but
was too late. The lift was a goods one, and was
easily worked. Any person could get on to it.
Roys were in the habit of coming on to the pre
mises to get pieces of wood.
John Wilkinson, despatch clerk, said he thought
deceased was trying to get off the lift and was
caught, w-hen tlie accident happened.
Dr. Mollison stated that tlie cause of death was
suffocation brought about by a picco of banana
obstructing tlie entrance of tlio windpipe. Pres
sure on the stomach would have caused vomiting,
which accounted for tlie presence of tho piece of
banana.
Arthur Minty stated that liis son, the deceased,
left home on Tuesday to collect some llrcwood.
. A verdict of accidental deatii was returned.
