ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE.
THE LABOUE BRANCH OF THE A.S.U.
(To the Editor of the Maitland Mercury.)
SIB,-I enclose a report on the labour branch of
tho A.S.U., which explains itBelf. It has been sent
to me anonymously, and is a curious and appro-
priate commentary on the claim that the officials ef
that Union had invented a system of book-keeping
" which made fraud impossible." What will strike
every honest man in the community, whether
shonrer or not, is the punishment which has been
deemed sufficient for the defaulting officials dis-
missed from their lucrative offices, where they had
so many opportunities ! "A fellow feeling makes
men wondrous kind," but I do not think the
sympathy with crime so often shown by the officials
of the A.S.U. will in this case meet with the ap-
proval of the working shearers, whose hard-earned
money has been made free with. What would the
country have said if Abigail had only been dis-
missed from his profitable appointment as Presi-
dent of the bogus bank ? I am, etc.,
W. E. ABBOTT.
