Importation of Live Stock.
AN EXCEPTIONALLY VALUABLE CONSIGN
".MENT.
The B.B'. Port Albert, which arrived on Tuesday
in Melbourne (says the Argus of Oct. 14), on her
maiden voyage, has on board the largest and most
valuable lot of blood stock ever brought to the
Australian colonies by any one vessel,
On the deck forward are carried in large loose
boxes, 10ft. x 10ft. x 9ft., 12 splendid racehorsea, 6
prize bulls and heifers, 2 Scotch collie dogs, besides
some poultry of special value, including 12 geese,
6 ducks, and 8 fowls. Mr. F. W. Day, member of
the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, returns
to Sydney, to which port the ship proceeds after
putting out Melbourne cargo, in charge of the
thoroughbred stock, which he purchased in Eng-
land for Mr. Samuel Hordern, of Ruford-park, New
South Wales. The whole of the live stock on
board is for this gentleman, and is worth about
¿615,000. Mr. Day speaks highly of the manner in
which the captain and officers seconded his efforts
to care for the animals during bad weather. There
is the tboioughbred mare Plevna, by Ben Battle
(she is winner of several races in England) ;
Deborah, also a winner of races, by Arbi-
trator, the son of Solon, who. was sire
of Barcaldine; Rhythm, by Kingcraft, by
King Tom (the mare won twelve races during her
short career on the turf) ; Spite, by Dutch Skater,
also a winner, and in foal to Bendigo ; Idolatry, by
Isonomy, sira of this year's _ Derby winner, out of j
La Trappe, by Hermit, and the dam of Barmecide,
one of the best horses in England for over two
miles; Blue Mould, by Coruleus by Beadaman,
brother to Blue Gown, and in foal to The Lamb-
kin, winner of the St. Leger ; Maggie Lauder, by
Fell Mell out of Bells of Scotland by Blair Athol ;
My Lena, by Zealot by Hermit out of Zella, by
Stockwell (this mare has a filly foal in England) ;
Miss Westbourne, by Westbourne by Oxford by
Irish Birdcatcher (this mare is a winner of many
races, and is in foal to Philamtnon by Solon) ;
Magenta, by Ben Battle out of Ischia by Wild
Dayrell ; Hebe, by Pursebearer ex iEnea by Volti-
geur II. by Voltigeur, and in foal to Autocrat by
Barcaldine ex Bal Gal ; and Gay Jenny, by Galliatd
out of Lady Jenny by See-Saw, the aire of Bruce.
The following cattle are on board :-Pomona's
Daily, the champion Jersey bull at the laBt Royal
Show at Doncaster, and winner of many other
prizes ; Horer o' Louthwick, the champion Ayrshire
bull at the Royal Show, and alao winner of other
prizes ; the prize Ayrshire heifers Eleanor and
Hyacinth, winners of many prizes, including first
prize at the Royal Show, and since they have been
purchased first and second at Kircudbright, in Scot-
land ; the Jersey heifers Rosy Dawn and Bersia
Black (the former gave birth on ttíe voyage to a
beautiful bull calf, which is familiarly known on
board as the Bosun), both heifers being prize-
winners.
? Of dogs there are the prize collie dog, Christopher
j un., winner of many prizes, including first at
Thirsk, since purchase ;. and the prize collie slut
Wear Val Pearl, a beautiful animal of excellent
breed. Notwithstanding that at one time the
weather was bad, all the live stock have arrived so
far in excellent order, under the care of A. Waueon,
H. Wilson, R. Millar, W. Sankey, and J. F.
Herdsone. I i
