Morpeth Borough Council.
EXTRAORDINARY VACANCY.
A less interesting proceeding than that which
took place at the Council Chamber, Morpeth,
yesterday, in connection with the reading of the
names of candidates nominated to fill the extra-
ordinary vacancy in the Morpeth Borough Council,
caused by the resignation of Mr. Thomas Camp-
bell, the late Mayor, in consequence of his intended
departure from the district, could hardly be
imagined. At noon, the hour appointed for the
meeting, the only persons who were assembled were
the Mayor (Dr. Bennett), Mr. Sucker, one of the
candidates, and the Council Clerk. Proceedings
were begun by the Mayor submitting his declara-
tion of office as Returning-Officer, and reading the
sections of the Municipalities Act bearing on the
election. He then said that the following candidates
had been nominated: John Robert Burg, carpenter ;
and Robert James Sucker, hotelkeeper. Neither
gentleman having withdrawn, a poll will be taken
on Thursday next beginning at 8 o'clock in the
morning, and terminating at 3 o'clock in the after-
noon.
The Mayor announced that he had received a
letter of apology from Mr. Burg, who was unavoid-
ably detained.
Mr. Sucker briefly addressed those present. He
said he regretted very much the small attendance,
as he had intended to explain his views pretty
fully on various matters. He, however, would say no
more on that occasion than that if he were elected
he would endeavour to show that he had a desire to
do something for his native town. He had riot been
able to do much during the brief period he was in
the Council on a former occasion, for he was only
elected a comparatively few weeks prior to the
close of the then municipal year.
At the instance of Mr. Sucker, thanks were
accorded to the Mayor, who responded, and the
proceedings ended.
