CASSILIS.
It affords me very great pleasure to forward you
a report of the plain and fancy dress ball which
took place in Cassilis on Prince of Wales Birth
night. The plain and fancy dress ball which took
place in the Town Hall, Cassilis, on November 9th,
in aid of the Cricket Club of that district, was one
of the most enjoyable, but not so much a success
financially as the previous one. The guests num-
bered about fifty, and may be mentioned as the
best representatives of grace and beauty of Cas-
silis. The dresses of the ladies were rich in tone,
striking for their variety of style, and were after
the latest and most approved modes ; almost every
variety of colour was represented, yet as a whole
they blended into a scene of exquisite beauty and
fascinating effect. Some of the dresses were of
costly fabrics. Dancing commenced at 8.30 to the
admirable strains of music supplied by Messrs. C.
and G. M'Crea, who handled their violins in a very
creditable and praiseworthy manner. The duties
of master of ceremonies, with nearly fifty guests
to be marshalled into order, were exceedingly
onerous, but difficult as they were Mr. Simon
Scully won general congratulations for the able
and courteous manner in which he discharged his
task. The catering was carried out in a style
which reflected credit upon the providores, and was
well appreciated by the guests. A well arranged
programme was very successfully performed, and
the proceedings concluded at three on the following
morning. White lustre and pale blue facings were
displayed with excellent taste by a married lady.
A young lady appeared in a similar costume, and
looked extremely nice. Chinese silk and cardinal
trimmings adorned the figure of another lady, and
were very much admired. A young lady in brown
sateen deserves especial notice. White and pink
facings looked very pretty. A damsel in light
blue looked very attractive. Lilac sateen, cream
lace, and red sash charmingly adorned the figure of
a petite damsel, who was unanimously voted the
belle of the ball.
