The amount of wealth annually lost to the mercan-
tile marine, here and elsewhere, presents a field inex-
haustible for the operations of the proposed com-
pany ; and, as a proof of this, the following vessels are
now lying in positions favorable for the application
of this patent, and many of which are still recoverable
thereby : —

The late disaster on our shores of the Victoria
Tower, valued at about £80,000, the salvage on which
would amount to over £20,000, the promoters are con-
fident that with the appliances of the patent all ready,
could have very speedily been brought safely into har-
bor, showing at once an enormous profit upon the
undertaking.
The promoters of this company, having: made favor-
able arrangements with the patentee (Mr W. Macfar-
lane), are prepared to offer to capitalists and others
interested in the recovery of vessels, the patent, which
does not expire until 1880, and also the ship Hurricane,
which they have purchased, reserving to themselves
5000 shares paid up to 10s. each.
The remaining 9000 shares are offered to the public,
subject to the payment of £400 sterling to the patentee ,
Mr Macfarlane), who shows his confidence in the
undertaklng by stipulating that such sum shall not be
paid until by his invention the ship has been placed on
the slip.
The ship Hurricano now lies in Capel Sound, Port
Philip Bay, and is in such a position as fairly to prove ,
the efficacy of the patent.
The actual cost of the apparatus and contingent ex-
penses to place the ship Hurricane, of 1300 tons re-
gister, on the slip, has been estimated at £4000, and
then the apparatus would always be ready to lift any
other vessel of her tonnage or under, the only outlay
being for wages and transport.
The promoters, in bringing this before the public,
feel assured of its success, the patentee being a seaman,
and having in January, 1840, been practically engaged
in the raising of the brig Welcome, at the mouth of
the Tyne, England, on much the same principle,
which proved a complete success, contrary to the
various opinions and expectations then entertained.
He also successfully managed for some time the Go-
vernment Patent Slip, Williamstown.
The plant, once prepared, can be used on any num-
ber of vessels at merely the working expenses, is easy
of transport, and can be applied at a very short notice,
The various exhibits made from time to time by the
patentee go far to prove its actual efficiency, and the
promoters are assured that, from the frequent occur-
rence for the recoverv of valuable vessels and cargo,
will be a most profitable investment, and will, in its „
first instance of success, return a handsome dividend.
Reference is made to the following letters from
various gentlemen of known experience :—

"Geelong, 9th December, 1869.
' Mr. Macfarlane, ,
' Dear Sir,— -I have very great pleasure in forward-
ing you my opinion of your patent for lifting sunken
vesses. Although it is many years since I had the
pleasure of seeing it, in company with the late Chief-
Harbor Master, I consider it the best and safest that
I have seen tried, and have often wondered why you
did not bring it before the public.— I remain, &c.,

"Sir,— Adverting to your letter of the 12th October
last, bringing under the notice of the Commissioner
of Trade and Customs a plan for raising sunken vessels,
I am directed by Mr. Miller to state that other engage-
ments prevented him personally inspecting the model ;
but that, having instructed the Chief Harbor Master
to examine the same, that officer has reported that,
from the various experiments exhibited, he has every
reason to believe that the plan would, with the
requisite apparatus, be successful in raising and re-
covering sunken vessels.— I have; the honor, &c,

"Dear Sir,— We, the undersigned, had much satis-
faction in viewing the success of your working model
the pneumatic principle for raising sunken vessels,
and feel no hesitation in expresuing our opinion that,
with a fair trial, it could not fail to be successful in
largcr operations ; for, without doubt, it is the best
method of making fast to the submerged vessel we have
yet seen or heard of, and not liable to the casualties
attendant on other methods which have hitherto been
used.
"The whole apparatus and the simplicity of work-
ing it recommends it to any one at once as most
feasible.
