INADEQUATE MAIL SEBVICE
ROTOMAfiAXA DELAYED.
HEAVY FOG IN THE TAMAR.
NO MAIL TILL FRIDAY.
liAUMCEJSTON, Wednesday.
If any further proof of the inadequacy
of the present inter-State mail
service were needed it is certainly supplied
(by to-day's erents, for the s.s.
Rotomahana which has often offended
in this respect has again missed, not
only the express but also the mail
train, which under ordinary circumstances
starts for (Hobart at 8.45 p.m.
The Rotomahana left Melbourne at
6 p.m. yesterday with the English mail
on board in addition to the Australian
mail. She entered the \Heads at-1.20
p.m. to-day, having (been delayed by
thick weather, and she proceeded np
the river to Rosevears, where she anchored
at 4.45 owing to the prevalence
of an exceptionally thick fog.
The Rowitta was despatched from
Launceston to bring up the mails aad
passenger, tout for the same reason
(the fog) was obliged to return. Motor
cars were theu resorted to and one
of these arrived at Rosevears before
9 o'clock, but a n«w difficulty arose,
for Captain Haitland lefused to give
up the mails, there being no authority
but the word of the ehauffcur for him
to do so. He might have thought he
was dealing with an Imposter who
was playing for high stakes.
After some delay the Postmaster
was communicated with and the mails
handed over. It was found, however,
that it was a difficult task to get the
mails from the iboat to the shore, and
no word has yet been received of the
care leaving Rosevears.
The mail train was despatched for
Holbart shortly before 11 o'clock, • having
already waited over two hours. It
will waif at Antill Ponds in the hope
of the mails leaving Rosevears in time
for the cars to overtake the train
there. It is quite possible that the
cars will not be aibie to reach Antill
Ponds in time, in which case Hobart
people will have to wait till Friday
morning before they get correspond-,
ence which was posted in Melbourne
on Tuesday.
