SPEECHES AT ST. MARY'S.
Messrs. G. F. Grubli, A. E. Solomon,
and Allen, condidates for BasB, addressed
a public meeting here last
night.
Mr. M'Hiigo took the chair.
Mr. Gnibl) favored the passing of
an Assessment Bill in order to ascertain
whether a tax on unimproved
value of land would suit Tasmania or
not. He would also s& alter the mining
laws as to tHake it possible for a
miner to make &h orchard on his holding
and so encourage him to stay on

option at once, and not defer its operation
till 1915. lie deprecated the attitude
the Labor party is taking towards
the Liberal party. He also deflated
blfe opposition to Tattersall's.
Mr. Solomon dealt with the Legislative
Council. He said lie would extend,
the franchise so as to make that
Hbuse more representative ot the
people. But at the same time he said
t!£ House bt Assembly has been making
a stalking horse of it by sending
bills up which the senders in their
hearts did not believe In and did hot
wish to become law. He wohid vote
for an assessment bill to detefmlne

and thus ascertain what revenue Can
bfe derived from it.
,Mr. Allen had engaged the other
iiali, but, finding he was clashing, accepted
Mr. Salomon's invitation to say
a few words after the other sp£aker£.
Mr. Allen is a candidate Cor tEei
Legislative Council, and hb made a
feood impression on the meeting.- -He

On Tuesday night Messrs. Batclielot
and Stewart met the electors of Uiad-
6tnne. Mr. Mallinson presided.
Mr. Batchelor Brst explained his
views, followed by Mr. Stewart, mul
both traversed what had been said at
other centres. Tbey received a )«iod
hearing from a very fair attendance.
