THE ALL RED ROUTE.
PROPOSED CONFERENCE IN
LONDON.
THE FEDERAL POSTMASTER-
GENERAL'S VIEWS.
MELBOURNE, Thursday.
It was recently suggested by the
Canadinn Government that "there
should be a conference in Londou ot
representatives of the British, Australian,
Canadian and New Zealaud Governments,
with reference to the All
Red mail scryice scheme.
The Federal Postmaster-General,
Mr. Joshua Thomas, accepts the proposition.
At the some time he has
Informed Dr. Coulter, the Can ad an
postal deputy, that the representative
of the Australian Government who
would attend the confereuee would
be instructed to urge that the steamships
to employed In that service
should be owned by the several Governments
concerned.
"The main objoct of the enterprise,"
continued the Postmaster-General, in
his communication,, "is "to knit together
more closely 'ihe scattered portions
of the Empire. I am convinced
that only by Government ownership
caii^ this object be attained with the
maximum of advantage, to our respective
communities. The representa-
'tlve of the Commonwealth at the Loudon
conference will not necessarily be
an Australian official from Melbourne.
Somebody In Londou may be appointed."
Mr. Thomas will
RECOMMEND TO THE CABINET
that the whole matter be banded over
to tbe Trade nud Customs Department,
on tbe ground that an "All Red
route" scheme lb primarily a matter
aflectlng commerce.
Mr. Thomas says: "It seems absurd
that Australians should impose Customs
duties to keep out Canadian
good a and the Canadians do the same
to keep out Australian products, and
then that both countries should propose
to subsidise steamers for carrylug
trade against these hindrances.
There should he some sort of preferential
tariff arrangement between this
country and Canada in order to make
the proposed All Red steamer service
a success."
