' EAST MAITLAND BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The usual fortnightly meeting of this Council was
held in the Chamber, Maitland Mechanics' Institute,
on Monday evening. Presents-The Mayor, Alder-
men M'Loughlin, Atkinson, Cunningham, Sparke,
Cullum, and Bourke. The minutes of the previous
meeting were read and coöflrtäed. '
CÔRBÊSPO'NIJENCE.-"fhe Council'Clerk read the
following correspondence :-Cepy of letter to Mr.
Jahn Dalton, respecting suppjy of blue metaJi^eEy
of letter io Mr. H. A. Smith, requesting Elm to causa
fo be removed, such portion of the fence lately
erected by him at the Victoria Bridge as will allow
of access to the original Government wateriBg-'placa
under the old bridge ; copy of letter to Mr. George
Bewick, accepting his offer to give blue metal in
exchange for gravel ; copy of letter to Mr. William
Miner, offering him 9s. per lineal yard for kereing
and guttering to be placed in Melbourne-street ;
copy of letter to Mr. Stephen Scholey, M.L.A., stating
that a report had reached the Council that there was
to be no telegraph station in the town, except tha
one in West Maitland, and requesting him fo use his
influence in Parliament to procure a separate station
for East Maitland. The letter proceeded : " You will
doubtless admit that East Maitland is fully deserving
of being made a station, so that messages may be sent
direct to any part of the colony without requiring to
be forwarded through West Maitland, as is now tha
case, causing a considerable loss of time, and so far
frustrating the ends for which the telegraph ia used.
In one instance I am told of a party losing £20_by_a
message of his being delayed in 'West Maitland.
Also, no one can deny that East Maitland ia quit«
as fully entitled to this advautage as many
places that enjoy it at present." Copy of letter
to the Po3tmaster-General on the same subject'';
copy of letter to Mr. James Brooder, calling upon
him to complete his contract in Pigrun Lane ; copy
of letter to Mr. George Bewick, asking him to causa
the weeds between the railway fences within the
municipality to be cut down ; copy of letter to Jar.
Spencer Butler, calling his attention to the injury
arising from the rain being allowed to fall from
certain houses in Newcastle-street, and requiring Min
to provide a remedy, as rendered necessary by the
by-laws. Letter from Mr. Miner, offering to perform
the kerbing and guttering at 10s. per lineal yard ;
letter from James Brooder, respecting his contract,
and other matters.-Brooder's letter was referred to
the Improvement Committee, and the matter of the
kerbing and guttering was allowed to stand over.
FINANCE COMMITTEE.-The report of this Com-
mittee, recommending payment of accouhts'atnount
ing to £47 13s. 9d., was received and subsequently
adopted.
IMPROVEMENT COMMITTEE.-Alderman Sparke
submitted a report from this committee, which stated
that the gravelling of Newcastle-street had been
completed as far as King-street; that High-street is
being gravelled, beginning at the junction of Bris-
bane-street ; that gravel has been put on Day-street
at the goods shed ; that the noxious weeds bave been
cut down in Duncan's-lane, and other places ; tljat
the ditch in Newcastle-street ¡B being filled up} that
the bridge on Newcastle road has been commenced;
and that tenders had been called for cleaning the
water-tables in portioüB of Newcastle, Lawes, Bank,
and Melbourne streets. The committee recommended
that Riley-street be gravelled from Melbourne-street
to Ann-street, nine feet wide and three inches thiele,
and the footpath in Ann-street along Mr. M'LougfiluTs
paddock ; that the bridge on Pitnacree road between
Melbourne-street and the railwaystation have a two
railed fence put on each Side of it ; and that the
Council take steps to have the stench caused by'tos
drainage from the gaol removed.-The report waa
received.
r The Council went into committee of the whole,to
receive tenders for cleaning water-tables in varïorja
streets. On resuming the Mayor reported tira
acceptance of several tenders.
THE RETIKINO ALDERMEN.-Alderman Cullum
proposed a vote of thanks to the retiring Aldermen,
Messrs. M'Loughlin, Cams, and Atkinson.-Alderman
Sparke Seconded the motion, which was supported
by Alderman Cunningham and the Mayor, and car-
ried.-Alderman M'Loughlin acknowledged the com-
pliment, and stated that be had been for eleven years
an Alderman, and he returned thanks for Mr.
Cains, who was absent.-Alderman Atkinson Tslio
spoke in acknowledgment.
VOTE OP THANKS TO THE MAYOR.-Alder-
man Cunningham then proposed a vote of
thanks to the Mayor who had occupied
the chair for a long time, and always had performed
the duties impartially.-Alderman Cullum seconded
the motion, Aldermen Sparke and M'Loughlin «tip
ported it, the latter gentleman stating that ne jpfl
the Mayor were two out of the five gentlemen wno
initiated the municipality eleven years ago, and the
motion was carried.-The Mayor replied.
THE DBAINASE FEOSI THE GAOL.-On the motion
of Alderman Sparke, seconded by Alderman Cunning-
ham, the Council Clerk was instructed to write, to
the Colonial Architect, calling his attention to the
nuisance arising from the defective drainage of the
gaol, and askinghim to devise means for its removal ;
and also to Mr. Scboley, to enlist bis interest in the
matter.
ERADICATION OP NOXIOUS WEEDS.-On the mo-
tion of Alderman Sparke, seconded by Alderman
Cullum, the Council Clerk was instructed to write
to owners of land requiring them to destroy the
noxious weeds growing thereon, as demanded by the
by-laws.
THE VICTORIA BBIDGE.-After some conversation,
Alderman Cunningham proposed that the Clerk
should be directed to wnte to Mr. Bennett, calling
his attention to the dilapidated state of the Victona
Bridge. It was determined to write to Mr. Scholey
on the same subject.
The Council then rose.
