! STOCKS , AND SHARES.
Saturday Afternoon.
Mining interests received a fair measure
of attention, gold scrip in the Bendigo and
Bnllnrat divisions being active throughout
in a decidedly speculative Change. Invest
ment stock tvas dull in a rather weak mar-
ket. Otving to the occurrence of the King's
birthduy holiday, the next meeting of tho
Stock Exchange of Melbourne will he held
on Tuesday morning.
A weaker feeling was displayed in con
nection with the short dated Board : of
Works 31 per cent, debentures, wliilo -re
stricted turnover took plnce in Metropoli

cial, preference, hank of issue, cased- a
couple of points upon trade in small lets,
but the ordinary shares in botli the Victo
ria and National hanks closed steadily nt
about recent prices. Siivcrton Tramway
wore fractionally firmer, and Melbourne
found inquiry for 17/.
Quotations for inter-State silver-lend and
copper shares were for the most purt wide,
und there wus little attempt to do' busi
ness. Broken Hill interests remained de
pressed, wliilo slock in the parent Lyell
Company declined a point. There was,
hotvuvei-, a slight disposition to harden
lutes for some ctf the lesser Lyclls.
Although considerable exchange was re
corded in Hustler's lleef scrip, activity
was purchased at the expense of rates, and
the stock closed at lower figures, with a
tendency to weakness. New Loch Fyne
were heavy on a wide quotation, but Mew
L'cmpsey's hardened, and Long. Tunnel Kx-
teuded recovered a couple of points: The
whole of the workings of the latter, com
pany are wearing a favorable appearance,
and the winze below the 2000 feet level is
down 46 feel, on a 3 feet reef carrying pay
able gold.

turn for the week owing to their being
shorthanded for three days. The manage
ment should take an early opportunity of
informing shoreholdcrs as to why no work
was dojii! in the leading drives this week.
Briscts lip scrip hardened, nnd there
was further inquiry for Smith's Creek ut
