HEREDITARY TALENT.
It appears that heredity plays a
large part in the diamond-cutting
industry. The business of cutting,
said the manager of a big diamond-
cutting business in Amsterdam to me
a few weeks ago. Is handed down
from father to son from generation
to generation, and outsiders seem to
have very little chancel against the
inherited talent of the few. A chance
remark of mine about the wonderful
stolen diamonds which tradition says
are re-split and re-set at Amsterdam
evoked a smile from my informant.
“The novelettes will tell you that is
so,” replied he. "but don’t you be
lieve it, we never see them here.”
Johnny was reading "The Life 01
a Sailor.” All of a sudden he turn
ed to his father and said, “Are all
sailors very small men, father ?”
"No, my son,” replied his father,
"‘why do you ask.”
‘"Well,” said Johnny, ‘‘l’ve just
been reading about a sailor goiiig to
sleep in bis watch.”
