¿fount Alexander Mail gives the following par-
ticulars, of A frightful occurrence at Redesdale,
Victoria, on Sunday, June 26 -" Toa couple
were well advanced in years, and named respec-
tively James and Sarah Roden By trade Boden
was a blacksmith, and formerly lived at Forest
Creek, where he was well known From what
we bave been able to glean of the tragical affair,
Mrs Boden was sitting leaning ber head on an
arm on a table Boden, who had leen drinking
heavily, and who does not appear to have bad
any prenons ill will towards his unfortunate
wife, quietly armed himself with a gan sod e,
razor. Standing near tbe door, be fired tit Mrs.
Roden, who received A large quantity of No. 6
«hot in the arm, and this probably saved ber
from instant death, and also many in the head,
ßoden then ran out and cut bis throat. An '
alarm having been raised throngh the report of
the gan, the condition of the victims of drink
was discovered. Boden had already bled to
death, but Mrs. Boden, though frightfully in-
jured, Tías conscious. In consequence of the
state of the country about the Coliban from the
rain and flood», the intelligence of the catastrophe
did not reach the police at Castlemaine until
eleven o'clock on Monday, when it was brought
in by the son, who had taken several hours to
perform his thankless task. The son lives
about a mile and a half from his parents. Mrs.
Boden was brought in to the Castlemaine Hos-
pital, and on Monday evening was in muoh pain
in her arm. Dr. Bone fears that amputation
«ill be necessary ; but considering the age of
the patient, and the fearful shock her system has
received, the operation «ill, if by any mews
possible, be avoided."
Mi. Nichols, a olerk in the office of the Vic-
torian Education Board, was recently killed by
a fall from his horse. He waa a member of the
Melbourne Hunt Club, and had been out with
the hounds at Keilor. A number of the party
vere returning, and had occasion to cross the
Mount Alexander Railway. The whip was en-
gaged in taking down the rail, assisted by Mr.
, Harden, when two or three members of the hunt,
inoluding the deceased gentleman, put their
I horses at the fence. The ground was slippery.
and they all baulked. The master remonstrated
with them, saying they could all go over the
gap presently. Mr. Nichols again charged the
fence, and his horse, as he was taken off, put his
fore feet into a bole, he struck the top rail above
his knees, tbrowingMr. Nichols on his face, where
he lay to all appearance stunned. The horse,
after balancing for a few seconds, fell forward on
tho unfortunate gentleman, and lay oast on him.
The boree was got np as quickly as possible, and
Mr. Nichols, after giving one or two convulsive
soDB, breathed his last. The body was removed to
Melbourne by a goods train that passed noon
after the accident happened. Mr. Nichols wa»
about 38 years of age, a native of Cornwall,"
England. He bad been about 15 years in the
colony, and had been employed in the office of
the Board of Education for the past six or seven
years. He was, we are informed, one of tho
most efficient clerks in the service.
