Monthly Meeting.
MONDAY, OCTOBER 8.
Present: Crs Tuckett (President),
Mackenzie, Pinnuck, Prentice, Dadley,

Correspondence.
From Shepparton Agricultural
Society, asking for the proclamation
of Thursday, November 8, as a
public holiday.—Crs Dudley and
Pinnuck moved that a public holiday
be granted.—An amendment
was moved by Crs McDonell and
Hooper that a holiday be-granted
for the Central Riding only.—The
motion was carried on the casting
vote of the President.
From Public Health department
notifying that helminthiasis (beef
measles) had been declared to be
a notifiable infectious disease, and
giving a synopsis of the life history
of the worm, the invasion of which
into the muscular tissues of cattle
ir.uses the disease.—Received.
From shires of Rodney, Glenlyon
Bft Bet, and Strathfieldsaye, stating
that it had been decided to sup
port the candidature of Cr Tuckett
for a seat on the executive of the
Municipal Association.—Received,
—From other councils asking for
support for Crs T. F. O'Brien (Bet
Bet), E. Buckland (Huntly), and
J. T. Beveridge (Talbot).—Left in
hands of council representative.
From City of Bendigo, asking
council to support the nomination
of Cr W. H. Taylor as a member of
the Country Fire Brigades' Board
—Cr Taylor supported.
From Nathalia school committee
asking that steps be taken to abate
the wandering stock nuisance in the
l own.—Cr McDonell said a lot of
-lock was coming in from the coun
try. The ranger had taken action
and the nuisance was being reduced

ably that the gates were left open

From E. J. McNicol, Nathalia :
asking why his name had been used
in connection with a proposed work
on the Nathalia-Shepparton road
The winter stated that he had had a
conversation with Cr O'Hanlon, and
was disappointed that a road
Through his property had not been
inspected by the engineer, as Cr O'-
Hanlon had given him to understand
that if he would do it on the same
terms as those accepted by Mr Flannel-
could have the work passed
by the council. The letter proceeded
to state that his (Mr McNicol's)
son had arranged to use the writer's
tractor for the purpose of
drawing a grader that it was understood
would be used on the work.
He had not met Cr O'Hanlon or the
engineer regarding the Nathalia-
Shepparton road work. His son said
that he had told the shire engineer
that the writer would not do the
work, but that he (the son) would
do it if he could arrange for the use
of the tractor. Cr O'Hanlon had
-aid at the council meeting that he
had arranged with "Mr McNicol'
to do the work, but he did not say
which Mr McNicol was meant.—Cr
O'Hanlon said it was with Mr Mc
Xicol, jun., with whom, he and the
engineer had made the arrangements.
In connection with the road
through Mr McNicol's property, he
(Cr O'Hanlon) said he could not
speak for the Central Riding, and
suggested that he attend the council
as a deputation. He was sorry that
Mr McNicol's name had been mentioned.
He moved that council expi
ess regret that Mr McNicol's name
had been mentioned—Cr Dudley se
onded. He understood Cr O'Hanlon
to say at last meeting that if Mr
McNicol did the work it would give
him some return for his rates. Mr
McNicol, jun., was not a ratepayer.

From Rev. F. W. Taylor, inviting
councillors to a united service
connection with the Centenary ce-

Invitation accepted.
From Mr F. E. Williams, police
magistrate, reporting that as a re
suit of a recount of the votes cast
at the Moira Riding election, he
found that the number of votes cast
for Cr O'Hanlon had been 173, and
for Mr Ross 171.—Received.
From J. Crozier, asking for a reduction
in rent of shire paddock in
Numurkah.—To. be reduced from £3
10/- per year to £1 15/-.
From R. Lobley, Tocumwal, offering
10/6 for planks taken from
Ulupna bridge.—Accepted.
From P. Knowles, sen., Barmah,
asking for permission to lay a pipe
from his property to the river.—

From Country Roads Board
(through Cr Tuckett, M.L.C.), stat
ing that temporary repairs would be
effected to the Blake-street bridge
Nathalia.—Cr McDonell said it was
unfortunate that councillors were
not appraised of the inspection, as
part of the picket fence at the ap
proach constituted a danger to pedestrians.—The
seqr^tary said the
fence was the property of the Water
Trust.—The secretary was instructed
to make inquiries regarding
the fence.

Mr L. Krutli reported the collection
of rates totalling £337 3/6.—
Received.
The treasurer reported the bank
account to be in credit £2740 1/5,
compared with a credit of £3295 3/6
at last report.—Received.
The secretary reported the financial
positions of the ridings to be:—
Central Riding, credit, £521; Eastern,
credit, £665; Western, credit,
£1467; Moira, credit, £10. The total
credits were £2740, compared
with £4616 at the corresponding
date last year.
Sister Easterbrook reported the
attendances at the Infant Welfare
centre^ for the quarter ended September
30 Had been as follows:—
Numurkah, 331; visits to homes,
164; Nathalia. 226; visits to homes,
68; Strathmerton, 116; visits to
homes, 4.—Received.

Mr W, C. Shaw reported:—
He had instructed H. Dempster
that portions of the road from Saxton-street
north, Numurkah, would
have to be re-gheeted owing to their
rought condition.—Received

Flood waters run over about 13
hains of Gordon's road, but if five
hains were constructed as a level
rossing and the balance formed and

ravelled owing to the poor class of
clay of which the road is made.—

The President said that he and Cr
McDonell had agreed to recommend
that no action be taken with regard
to the request for a light at the
cemetry bridge, Nathalia.—Approved.
Cr Mackenzie moved that applications
be called for weighbridgekeepers.—Seconded
by Cr Lancaster
and carried.
Cr Prentice said complaints had
been
made
that
the
Numurkah
weighbridge
was not
satisfactory.
Two
farmers
had
"weighed
their
waggons three times without taking
the waggons off the bridge, and
different weights were obtained on
different
positions.—Bridge
to
be
tested.
Cr Prentice said the fence at Pellew's
gravel pit was in a bad states
—Engineer to have pit closed and
fence repaired.
Cr McDonell moved that formations
be Repaired between
Bourke
and
Wilson,
and
between
Sloley
and Heard.—Seconded by Cr Mackenzie
and carried.
The
engineer
reported
having
with Crs Tuckett and McDonell interviewed
Mr Baxter with regard to
his pit.
It was decided to prospect
to ascertain which way the gravel
tended, and when this was done the
necessary
arrangements
would
be
made.
Cr O'Hanlon said ratepayers were
anxious to hav e a road surveyed
from H. Taylor's through the forest
to Power's, and he moved that the
engineer and riding members make
an inspection with the forest officer.—Seconded
by Cr Pearce and
carried.
Cr Gordon said ratepayers were
nxious to have the developmental
road east from Wunghnu put in order.
Portions of the road were im
passable, and if the council were not
ble to get the work done a big petition
would be sent to the Country
Roads Board. He moved that a deputation
wait upon the board.—Seconded
by Cr Hooper and carried,
Cr Lancaster moved that engin
eer prepare plans for the expenditure
of £200 on the Picola North
road.—Seconded by the President
and carried.
Cr Hooper moved that the engineer
have two bad spots on the road
between Thompson and Prentice put
in order.—Seconded by Cr Dudley
and carried.
Cr McDonell drew attention to
the bad state of road at Findlay's
corner on Shepparton road, in Central
Riding, and Cr Gordon moved
that attention be given.—Seconded
by Cr Hooper and carried.
Cr Dudley moved that a 9-inch
pipe be put in load in front of Tobin's
house.—Seconded by Cr Hooper
and carried.
Cr O'Hanlon moved that engineer
report on E. and W. road from Garonne's
gate to Pridmore's sandpit
—Seconded by Cr Pearce and carried.
Cr O'Hanlon moved that leave of
absence be granted Cr Garonne for
a further three months.—Seconded
by Cr Pearce and carried.
Cr Prentice moved that engineer
and riding members inspect Sandmount
road near old hotel.—Seconded
by Cr Mackenzie and carried.
Cr Dudley moved that tenders be
called for gravelling street from
main street, Wunghnu, to railway
station.—Seconded by Cr Hooper
and carried.
Cr Gordon said the trees along
th e electric line route in Wunghnu
were constantly being trimmed, and
he thought they should be destroyed.—Cr
Hooper said that as the
trees were being cut down to "about
seven feet it would be a pity to
destroy them, as they were nice
trees.—Cr Dudley said the trees
ight as well be taken out as
reated the way they were being
trimmed.—The engineer said he had
given instructions to cut the trees
10 feet from the ground. H e thought
it would take some time for the new
growth to reach the wires.—No ac
tion was taken.
Regarding the lighting of bonfirs
in Numurkah and Nathalia on
Centenary Day (November 19) the
engineer said he had not been able
to obtain material for the Nathalia
fire.—The President siaid arrangements
would be made for a supply
of fuel.
Cr Gordon said he had been told
that woodcarters had said they had
permission to cut trees on creek
frontages that were partly dry. If
the practice were continued there
would soon be no trees left. He
moved that the forest officers be
asked to give the matter attention.
—Seconded by Cr Hooper, who said
that trees were felled that had only
one dead limb on them.—Cr O'Hanlon
said the Forests department had
promised not to issue permits to cut
timber without first consulting the
council. Trees were being cut by
farmers and others to obtain hives
of bees.—The motion was earned.
